“Bear,” I moaned. “You really should see a doctor. I’m sure there has to be something they can do for you.”

He nodded. “There is, but that would mean I would be out of work for four to six months. Back surgery isn’t a joke, mama, and I cannot be out of work for that long.”

“I would think being pain free outweighs being out of work for a few months.” He was such a man. He was in pain but didn’t want to do anything about it.

“Someday, I’ll get the surgery.”

I smiled and watched him eat four more pieces of sausage in one bite. “I bet your mom had one hell of a grocery bill when you were growing up.”

Bear shrugged. He swallowed the mouthful and reached for his beer. “You gonna eat anymore?”

I shook my head. “I’m pretty full of cheese and wine coolers.”

He finished his beer and set it on the nightstand.

Something had changed. It wasn’t obvious, but there was a shift in Bear.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

“Just tired, mama. I think I’m gonna hit the recliner for the night.”

I nodded and faked a yawn. “Me, too. Though, I’ll stay right here.”

He grabbed the platter and slipped out of the bed. “You got plans for tomorrow?”

“Uh, I’m going to work. I don’t know if I’ll be able to make it the whole day, but I’m going to try.” I couldn’t sit around the house anymore. “If anything, I could man the front desk for a few hours.”

“You sure?”

I shrugged. “Or would you rather Luna and I join the hunt for Dr. Douche?” I smirked.

Bear winked and grabbed his empty beer can. “I think giving work a shot seems like a great idea. Just make sure one of the guys are with you.”

I rolled my eyes. “I know. Easy said he’ll be here around nine.”

Bear nodded. “Good deal.” He moved to the doorway and turned off the light. “Night.” He closed the door partway, and I strained my ears to listen to him go down the stairs.

Not a sound.

I tucked my hands under my head and closed my eyes. I was not going to think about the fact that Bear had said earlier today I could hang out with him tomorrow.

Or the way he had changed when I mentioned his mom.

Nope, not going to think about it.

Two hours later, I finally fell asleep.

All I dreamed about was Bear.
