I wished I could, but there was no way I could sleep in the bed.

Greta threw back the covers and jumped out of bed.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

She grabbed my hand and tried to pull me across the bed. “We’re sleeping in the recliner.”

“I’m sleeping in the recliner.”

She shook her head. “Nope. I’m not sleeping without you, so that means we’re both sleeping on the recliner.”

“You don’t need to do that, mama.” There was no way she was comfortable curling up with me on the recliner.

“I do, and that is what I’m going to do until you get that back surgery to fix you.”

I rolled my eyes and lumbered out of bed. She turned off the TV and stomped down the hallway. I grabbed the comforter from the bed and followed her into the living room.

Five minutes later, we were camped out in the recliner with some chick flick playing.

“I can’t get the surgery right now, mama,” I muttered.

She sighed and rested her head on my shoulder. “I’m not saying you’re going to go in tomorrow, Bear, but I am saying you need to do it soon.”

“I’m kind of busy trying to find the psycho who’s killing all of the club girls.”

“I know. After that, you’re getting fixed.”

I sputtered on the popcorn in my mouth.

“Your back, lumberjack. I’m not talking about cutting off your boys from swimming, Bear.”

I chuckled and grabbed some more popcorn. “There’s that reading between the lines again, mama.”

“Mmhmm,” she muttered. She smothered a yawn with her hand and snuggled into me. “You’ll get it eventually.”

She drifted off to sleep, and I set the bowl next to the recliner. I clicked off the TV and pulled the blanket over us.

Another night with Greta next to me, and I settled even further into the feeling of knowing she was my new home.
