Chapter Twenty-One

Greta

“SO?”

I tipped my head to the side. “So?”

“So?” Luna repeated.

I looked around. “Did I miss something?” I whispered.

Luna and I were at Brick in the Wall waiting for Birdie to join us while Mouse sat on his bike in the parking lot.

It had been two weeks since Bear and I had gotten back from Colorado, and life had fallen back into a routine. It wasn’t like any routine I had ever had before, but it was good.

Everything was good, except Dr. Douche was still a ghost.

Bear and Ransom had exhausted every possible lead they had and were once again back to square one of hoping a lead would appear.

“So, how is it living with a lumberjack?” she asked.

I rolled my eyes and took a sip of my coffee. “Probably the same as it is living with the po-po.”

Luna flipped me off. “Ransom has asked that you stop calling him that. We’re not juniors in high school.” Luna leaned toward me and smirked. “Those were his words, not mine.”

I laughed and shook my head. “All I need you to tell me is you call him Detective Ransom in bed, and I will die right here.”

“Only if you tell me if you’ve ever called Bear daddy,” she countered.

I pursed my lips and shrugged. “It might have slipped out once.”

“Ha! I freakin’ knew it!’

“Spill on the detective,” I demanded.

Luna shook her head. “Not once.”

I huffed and took a sip of my coffee. “Disappointing.”

“What’s disappointing?” Birdie asked as she walked up to our table. “Please don’t tell me I’m going to have to pretend to die because you two are outrunning the hot cop.” She pulled out the chair in between Luna and me and sat.

“Not this time,” Luna laughed. “Ransom knows we’re here, and we have Mouse in the parking lot keeping an eye on us.”

I grabbed the coffee I had ordered for Birdie and set it in front of her. “For you.”

Bridie smiled and wrapped her hands around the cup. “Ah, coffee. My lifeline. I’ve been filling in on my days off in the ER, and I am just straight up tired.” She took a sip and smiled. “And now I can really relax since I know I’m not going to have to act.”

Luna patted her hand. “We are also relaxed for that same reason.”

I raised the back of my hand to my forehead and feigned fainting. “Oh, I do believe I feel a might insensibility coming on.”

“Stop,” Birdie moaned. “I told you guys I wasn’t good at acting, and you didn’t listen to me. Thankfully, Ransom didn’t blow a gasket when I fainted.”

“It’s cute that you think you could even remotely call that fainting,” I joked.

Birdie clamped her lips shut and took the lid off her coffee. “How about we talk about something else?” she suggested.

“I was asking Luna if she ever slipped with a ‘Oh, Detective,’ when she was doing the dirty with Ransom.” I leveled my gaze on Luna. “She hasn’t.”

“But Greta has called Bear daddy,” Luna sang.

Birdie cocked her head to the side. “You’re gonna need to clue me in on who Bear is.”

“Ransom’s best friend. He’s a bounty hunter who is in town to help Ransom with a case,” Luna explained. “After Greta narrowly missed being offed by the Club Girl Killer, thanks to Bear, she’s been spending all of her time with him when she isn’t working.”

“Pretty sure you narrowly missed being offed by the Club Girl Killer, too,” I pointed out.

“And I fell in love with the guy who saved me.” She leaned forward. “Just like you are with Bear.”

“I am not falling in love,” I grumbled.

“That’s because you already love the man,” Luna snickered.

“Shouldn’t you be worried about the fact that you’re a traitor and not what Bear and I are doing?” I growled.

“Touchy, touchy,” Luna laughed. “And I know I’m not a traitor. You and Meg can call me that all you want, and it isn’t going to matter.”

“Why are you mad that you’re in love with Bear?” Birdie asked. “Shouldn’t that be something you want to tell everyone?”

Luna sat back and smiled. “She doesn’t want to tell anyone because she hasn’t even told Bear yet because she thinks he doesn’t love her back.”

“I really hate how well you know me.” I folded my arms over my chest and turned to look at the bakery case. “I need to eat my feelings. Who wants a croissant and a long john?”

“Or you could just tell Bear you love him, and then, he could eat you?” Luna smirked.

Birdie choked on her coffee and a loud gasp escaped my lips.

“That’s a good idea,” Birdie croaked. She grabbed a napkin and wiped a splatter of coffee on her shirt. “When am I going to learn that I shouldn’t drink when you two are around. I never know what is going to come out of your mouths.”

“I love you needs to come out of Greta’s mouth,” Luna teased.

“I seem to remember you not too long ago not wanting to tell Ransom you even liked him, let alone loved him.”

Luna shrugged. “I’m the complicated and difficult one. No surprise that I was stubborn with Ransom.”

“But look at you now,” Birdie chirped.
