Chapter Seven

Zag

“Is he coming?”

Tess grasped my hand and squeezed. “Yes.”

I still hadn’t figured out how the hell we were going to get out of here.

Tess had slept for what felt like a long time, and then I finally dozed off. When we had woken up, the sunlight was back to streaming through the crack in the window.

The locks on the door clicked open one by one, and then the door swung wide with Malcom on the other side.

“Miss me?” he cackled. He stepped into the basement and smiled wide.

He had the same vest filled with explosives strapped to his chest and a gun pointed directly at me.

“You’re not going to get up to greet me?” Malcom asked. “That’s not very hospitable, is it?” He held up the paper bag he had in his other hand. “I’ve even brought you two water bottles today and gave you an apple.”

“Let us out of here,” I growled.

Malcom shook his head and tsked. “No, I don’t think that will happen. I’ve got plans for you two.”

“We don’t want anything to do with your sick plans, Malcom. Just let us go.” I didn’t want to piss him off because he did have the upper hand in all of this, but I wasn’t going to let him think he had any power over me.

He tossed the bag toward us. “As if you really have a say.” He nodded to the bag. “Eat. You’re lucky you have another meal.” He stepped back and grabbed the door. “Maybe you get to see tomorrow.” He slammed the door shut.

I rushed it and blindly reached for the handle. A lock clicked before I could twist the handle.

“Nice try,” Malcom called, “but not fast enough.” He laughed loudly and clicked the rest of the locks.

I yanked on the door with all my strength. It didn’t budge.

“Son of a bitch!” I screamed. I yanked, pulled, and rattled the door. It got some of my frustration out, but the door didn’t move.

I flattened my hands on the door and sighed heavily. “We have to get out of here, Tess.” Every second we are in here, we were closer to dying. We had to stop him from whatever plan he had. If he killed Tess and me, he was just going to move on to another member of the Devil’s Knights until we were all dead.

I couldn’t let that happen.

I spun away from the door and stalked to the sliver of light coming through the window. “We’re going to get that window open if it’s the last fucking thing I do, Tess,” I vowed.

The bag of food crumpled by my feet. “Then we better eat because we’re going to need all of our energy.”
