“It might not actually mean anything.”

“Or it could ruin our plan.”

“So, what? When did you start liking his plan anyway?”

“I just don’t think we should mention it.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me, right?” I snort. “You know Dante would be furious if this turns out to be important, and he finds out we kept it from him.”

“Which is why he’s not going to find out.”

“Like he still hasn’t found out about Anna?”

Luci’s shoulders tense as he slowly turns to look at me, his jaw tight and eyes dark.

“Why would you bring her into this?”

“Because it’s all linked, isn’t it?”

“They have nothing to do with each other,” he spits, taking a menacing step toward me, not that he intimidates me as I tower over him. “None of this has anything to do with her!”

“Really? Why don’t we let Dante be the judge of that?”

Luci is at my throat before I even have a chance to react, shoving me up against the nearest wall. I grin down at him which only makes his grip around my throat tighten.

“You swore you wouldn’t say a word,” Luci hisses, “that was part of our deal.”

“Iknowwhat our deal was, and I’ve kept it … but I’m starting to wonder if that’s such a good idea.”

“A deal’s a deal, Seven.”

“I thought so too, until Valentine suddenly showed up again.”

Luci’s eyes narrow at this.

“So, what? You want to renegotiate our deal, too? For a girl you hardly know?”

“I think you should consider it. After all, sheused to be a girl we hardly knew.”

Luci snorts at this, shaking his head as he releases his hold on me and steps back.

“Dante’s really gotten to you, hasn’t he?”

“No,” I scoff before sighing, “but I can’t say the same for the girl.”

“Evi isn’t like Anna. No matter how much she reminds us of her.”

“Then how does she know my real name?”

“I don’t know, but it doesn’t matter. We have a plan, and we need to stick to it.”

“And I happen to disagree this so-called plan. I think we’d be much better off if we stuck to our original goals.”

“Which is exactly why Dante doesn’t want you alone with her,” Luci bites back, turning to start walking again.

“He doesn’t wanteitherof us alone with her,” I say. “Shouldn’t that tell you something?”

“Yeah, that we need to act faster if his plan is going to work.”
