“She had a diary,” Dante explains, his voice deadpan. “I know I shouldn’t have kept it, but I couldn’t bring myself to destroy it … until now.”

“What the hell, Dante?” I growl, trying to push past him to pull the book out of the fire.

“Evi found it,” Dante says, shoving me back. “It had to be destroyed before she found out too much.”

I blink at him, the fight in me dying at this.

“You mean she’s read it? What was in it?”

“She didn’t get far, only the first page or so, judging by the way her scent was focused … but she did find a picture.”

“What was the picture of?” Luci asks.

“Of Anna … and us.”

“So, she knows then.”

“I don’t think she knows nearly as much as she thinks she does,” Dante says. “The caption written on the back was mostly blurred out, including the date.”

“Dante, I need to tell you something.”

“What is it?”

“Evi, during training this morning, she—”

“She’s becoming harder to resist,” Luci cuts in, shooting a dark look my way. “I think we have to speed things up if our plan is going to work.”

“It’s too risky,” Dante says, shaking his head. “We can’t send her in before she understands her mission.”

“I thoughtyouwere supposed to be seeing to that,” I say, “or have you been too busy sticking your dick in places it shouldn’t be.”

“Seven,” Luci growls in warning.

“I think he owes us an explanation, seeing how he’s forbidden us from mating with her.”

“It won’t happen again,” Dante says. “It was simply a misunderstanding, and I take full responsibility for that.”

“A misunderstanding?” I scoff. “Is that what you’re calling it?”

“Yes,” he hisses. “I’ll clarify things with her tonight.”

“I bet you will.”

“Don’t test me, Seven. I have little patience for you or anyone else right now. Speaking of training. Why aren’t you with her right now?”

I glance at Luci who gives me the slightest shake of his head.

“We needed some air,” I answer lamely.

“Fine. You’ve had your air, now go back to Evi. Luci’s right, we don’t have much time left if we’re going to make this work.”

Luci and I turn to leave, but only make it a few steps.

“Seven, would you please stay behind for a moment? I need to talk to you.”

I roll my eyes before shooting Luci a dark look. Did he rat on me with that stupid mental thing he does?

“Wait for me by the door, yeah?”

“Fine,” Luci agrees before heading off toward the house.

“What?” I ask, turning to look at Dante and fully expecting him to tell me off for messing around with Evi.

“I need you to do test something for me,” he says after a long pause, the tone of his voice suddenly low and urgent. I can’t help tilting my head in curiosity as he looks over my shoulder toward Luci’s retreating back. “And I need you to keep it a secret from Luci.”

Secret, huh? This should be good.

“Alright, I’ll bite. What do you want me to do?” I ask, as a grin slowly spreads across my face.
