Chapter Eight

Emma rolled over and sighed. She felt groggy but better than she had. The room was shrouded in shadows, telling her she’d slept most of the day.

She sat up on the side of the bed and got her bearings.

“There she is.”

Her head jerked around, and she saw Devon and another man.

“Baby, this is Alex. He’s the doctor who took care of your arm. Is it okay if he checks it out?”

Her gaze went back and forth before she nodded. “You’ll be here with us?”

“Of course.”

She relaxed and smiled. As long as Devon was there, she would be fine.

Emma watched the doctor pull things out of his bag and set them on the nightstand before turning toward her as he pulled on gloves.

“Hi, Emma. I’m going to unwrap your arm, okay?”

“Okay.”

Devon sat down beside her and wrapped an arm around her waist for support. It helped to settle her even more.

The bandage was unwrapped and tossed onto the nightstand.

She cringed. The injury was longer than she thought, and the sight of the black stitches made it even worse

The doctor thoroughly examined it. “This looks good. I think all I have to do is give you one more shot of antibiotics, and then you guys can change the bandage every day. If you see it get red anywhere, call me, but otherwise, I’ll be here in a week to take the stitches out.”

He filled a syringe and then gave her a shot in her arm. She’d always hated shots, so she squeezed her eyes shut to avoid seeing it.

“All done.”

Her eyes sprang open. “You did it already?”

Alex and Devon chuckled.

“I excel in giving shots.”

“I’m glad,” she said.

Emma watched as the doctor put gel over the stitches and then rewrap it.

After Alex put his things in the bag, she held out her hand. “Thank you for helping me.”

He gently squeezed her hand. “You’re welcome. Get some more rest and gain a few pounds, and you’ll be back to new.”

Devon smiled. “I’ll be taking care of that. She’ll be stronger soon.”

“I have no doubt you’ll take good care of her. I’ll see you soon.”

Emma watched and listened as the men walked away.

“What are you thinking about?”

She hadn’t realized Devon was back. Her mouth went dry, and her gaze roamed over him as he leaned against the doorjamb with his hands in his pockets. Her eyes stayed glued to the bulge behind his zipper. He looked massive, and she wondered if it was normal.

“Pet, you need to stop looking at me like that.”

She caught the warning in his tone, and her gaze flew up to his.

“What?”

He tilted his head to the side and studied her.

“How much sexual experience do you have?”

“I … why?” She could feel herself blush.
