I sat there, unable to get up from the couch. Vanessa was the first woman to ever bring me to my knees, and it terrified me.

She wanted me to leave her, but I couldn't. I needed an answer right away. So I returned my attention to her.

"You are free to leave," I told her. My heart sank the moment the words left my mouth, but I said them anyway, determined never to look back.

Vanessa turned, and her eyes were filled with something other than anger. It looked like worry.

She still cares, at least, a part of her does. I looked into hereyes and saw some emotion flash through them.

"I don't want to leave," Vanessa said, and I was relieved.

A cloud lifted above my head, and a warm sensation grew in my chest.

I will win your love back, Vanessa, I promised myself. We'll find our way back to one another.

VANESSA

My heart skipped a beat as I sat so close to Ethan. Despite everything, Iwas soin love with him. It was difficult to resist the urge to reach out and grab him, but I did it. I had so much on my mind that I had to take a break and relax.

My encounter with Luke was still vivid in my mind. Ethan looked the guilty part, and Luke kept more from me than he was telling.I knew I could learn more from him if I could keep his favor for a little longer.

Just the day before, Luke had asked me to kill Ethan.Even though I was furious with Ethan, I couldn't bring myself to kill him. Luke, on the other hand, had a plan.

"I want you to bring Ethan to me, alone. He never goes anywhere without Tristan and an extra bodyguard, but if you ask, he will come alone. He trusts you," Luke had told me.

I could tell Ethan trusted me as we sat there. I didn't doubt his feelings for me, but I doubted he'd ever be less dangerous. His enemies would always pursue him, and they would only grow in number.

Luke's instructions were straightforward: "I want you to remove all of the bullets from his gun. He always carries one with him when he goes out. So, empty his gun and bring him to me. We should all meet in a remote location, likeyour uncle's old apartment."

Your uncle wants you dead, I wanted to say as I stared at him, his head resting on the sofa's headrest. His eyes met mine, askingabout my desires, anything I could ever ask of him, for us to be as we'd been.

His beautiful dark eyes remained fixed on mine, unaffected by my body as they usually were; he was focused onjust me and my happiness. But I had a plan of my own, and though it hurt to see him so reliant on me, I couldn't enjoy it that day.

"I'm won't leave," I said again. "There's something I need to do."
