‘I’m two days late,’ she blurted out, unable to hug the secret to herself any longer.

He stared at her with that same blankness but she could see behind his ice-blue eyes to the ticking brain and knew he was making the same calculations. Clara’s cycle was as regular as clockwork. In the three months of their marriage she’d never been even a day late.
