Taking her hand, he pulled her to her feet and into his arms. “I’ve missed you this past week. Let’s not fight again.”

“Never,” she whispered as their lips met again. In the back of her mind, Violet knew they’d have plenty of disagreements along the way. But by the grace of God, they’d get through the hard times.

Grabbing the blanket, Hayden draped it over his arm then reached for her hand. “Want to walk back to town?”

“There’s nothing I’d rather do.” She replaced the hat with her free hand and grabbed her purse.

“And if it rains?”

Violet smiled. “Then we get wet. I’ve never danced in the rain with a man I love.”

“That can be arranged.” Draping his arm around her waist, Hayden pulled her close. “Along with all the meatloaf sandwiches you can eat, sloppy kisses from Haystack, and plenty of red roses from Mrs. B.’s garden.”

“Sounds perfect.” Violet snuggled into the curve of Hayden’s arm.

Then they laughed, talked and dreamed about their future together, and shared sweet kisses—even a dance or two.

All the way home.
