“Don’t kill him,” Chase called out when he walked away.

Gavin was next to them when he yanked Branden away from Alexa. “What the fuck are you doing?”

Branden jerked his arm from his grip and then straightened his suit. “Nothing. I just wanted to meet her and tell her how disappointed I was that I didn’t get her.”

Gavin wrapped an arm around Alexa, and his anger rose when he felt how badly she was shaking.

“I can guarantee no one in this room would have let you walk out with her because everyone knows you’re a sick fuck and trash.”

Gavin saw the fury that crossed the man’s face before he shut it down and smiled. “There are other ways to get to her. I’m sure she’ll give me a chance eventually.”

“Let me put this as simple as I can so you can understand it. If I ever hear of you touching her, you’ll deal with me, fucker, and we both know you’d lose.”

Brendan gritted his teeth. “You forget, I’ve got a lot of friends in high places.”

Gavin snorted in disgust. “Yeah, the scum of the earth is who you deal with.”

Branden shrugged. “Someone needs to defend them in court.”

“You’re as crooked as they are.”

Brendan grinned. “You’d never be able to prove it, though, and that’s what pisses you off. When you were a cop, you couldn’t pin anything on me. Now that you’re a bigwig at some company, you still think you’ll find something. Someday, you’ll get what you deserve. Mark my words.”

Gavin rolled his eyes. “You might take into account I’m not a cop anymore, so I don’t have to follow the rules like I had to on the force.”

Branden snorted. “You’d never break the law.”

“Fucker, you have no fucking idea what I’d do when it came to protecting what’s mine.”

Gavin growled and pushed Branden’s hand away from Alexa when he went to touch her. “Never ever touch her.”

Branden stepped back and grinned. “We’ll see.”

Gavin watched the prick walk away before he turned his attention to Alexa. “Oh, honey.” He pulled her into his arms at the look of fear on her face.

“He wants to touch me, Gavin.”

He tilted her head up. “What did he say?”

“He said it was a shame that he didn’t get me because he would have made the night special. He went on to say that he might not get my … cherry,” she said and blushed crimson red, “but he will show me other things I might enjoy. I said no, I didn’t want to be with him, and he said he could change my mind. I’m scared of him. He has a black soul.”

Gavin nodded. He’d also felt the man was worse than some of the people he defended in court and had always gotten a dark vibe from him. Over the years, he’d heard so many things he did to women, but the women would never press charges because they were terrified of him or couldn’t remember because he’d drugged them before he raped them, and they could never pin anything on the fucker.

“I won’t let him hurt you.”

Alexa shook her head. “We’ve just got tonight. He’ll wait until I’m alone.” She sighed and pushed him back so she could stand. “This isn’t your problem. Can we talk about something else?”

He gritted his teeth. It was definitely his problem, but he’d leave the discussion alone for now. “Are you hungry?”

She nodded. “We’ll have to go somewhere that’s not fancy. The dress they put me in is nice, but the tennis shoes ruin the look.”

The red dress was fitted on the top, displaying her large breasts, but the bottom flared a little. It was a few inches above her knees. He took her hand. “I’ve got just the place, sweetheart.”

Something in his heart lightened at the look of trust in her eyes. He had no idea where this was going with her, but he promised himself he would protect her and not lose the trust she so graciously gave him.

Chapter Three

Thiry minutes later, Gavin helped her out of his car, locked the doors, took her hand, and led her into the Mexican restaurant. It might look like a rundown place for some, but he knew the owners, and it was the best Mexican food he’d ever had.
