Returning with the wine, an expensive bottle she was saving for this night, and two glasses, she uncorked the bottle, poured, and handed Justin a glass.

“This is my favorite time of evening,” he said, relaxing in the chair. “

The sun had set, and the glow on the headland was so beautiful, she got a little choked up.

“I had a wonderful day. Do you know what I kept thinking? We’re making memories. Dancing with you, teasing you, all the laughter, and especially watching other women who are so envious of me, I love it.”

“I thought I made a stupid King Louis,” Justin said, amused.

“Why on earth did we choose those disturbing characters, anyway?”

“Because they’re interesting,” he answered. “They were married when she was only fourteen years old. No wonder she made so many mistakes. She was too young.”

“That’s always a convenient excuse,” Maggie said. “I’ve used it myself in the past.”

“Me too,” he said. “I’m glad we’re old enough to know what we want.”

“I’m glad, too,” she said. “When I start to doubt myself, I remember that I now have life experience. I know what to avoid,I think. I’ll never purposely hurt you or make you angry, Justin.”

“And I vow to try not to control you or to tell you what to do.”

They raised their glasses to toast.

“Don’t look now, but they’re coming into the yard,” Justin whispered.

“I don’t believe it,” Maggie said tearfully. “They’re all coming, too.”

“Look, there’s the pregnant mare from the new band. They found the opening I made and just helped themselves in. We might actually have a delivery here this spring. Are you happy?”

Justin looked over at Maggie when she didn’t answer, and saw that she was weeping. Reaching for her, he pulled her over on his lap.

“Honey, I told you they’d come back.”

She cuddled up to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. “You did. I guess I was worried and tired of waiting. It’s been so lonely without them, even with you here,” she teased.

“Well, you got what you wanted. I never thought when I asked you to have horses that they would become more important than I am.”

“Now that they’re here, I’d like you to come upstairs with me so I can show you how important you are.”

He gently pushed her off his lap and popped up out of the chair. “Show the way, please.”

They went back into the cottage, but before she locked the door, she took one last look into the yard and blew the wild horses a kiss goodnight.

The End
