“Um, I’m right here,” Maggie said, snickering. “Don’t talk about me like I’m in the next room.”

“Trying to soften my criticism,” Katrina said, laughing.

“You know, confidentially, I think I got some of my faith back, too.”

Her friends surrounded her, hugging her. “That’s wonderful,” Katrina said. “I’ve prayed for that for you.”

“Well, it’s not like I’ll be in church with Justin every Sunday like you and Dave are, but at least I can pray now. At least I can think about it.”

“Aw, that’s good news,” Annie said. “Baby steps.”

“Speaking of baby steps, what’s next for us?” Maggie asked.

“Well, in about a month, I’m going to stop taking the pill,” Katrina said.

“We should all do it,” Annie said. “I kind of want to be married first this time, but Chris is trying to talk me into the courthouse, and I think he might be right. I’m not in the mood for a big throwdown like you had, even though I told him it was what we needed to do.”

“Trust me, it was all Rose’s doing,” Maggie replied. “I really want the three of us to be pregnant together. Our kids love each other. We need to aim for that.”

“Okay, well, if history repeats itself,” Katrina said, “what’s it going to be?”

Maggie put her finger up, and they all hooked on, grinning at each other, recreating a ritual from their childhood when only a pinky promise could get them through another day. Katrina led the call, and they chorused, “Babies together again!”

The End
