Kai

Kai wasn’t sure how long she was supposed to wait before storming down to the basement to see what was going on. She felt like she was holding her breath the entire time that she hid with Ryker in an upstairs bedroom closet that smelled like cheap cologne and athlete’s foot.

As soon as they heard Gabe’s car pull up and he come into the house, shouting for his friend, she wanted to run down to confront him, but that wasn’t the plan. Instead, she let Ryker keep her up in that smelly closet until they heard the gunshot. God, she was terrified that Taz had been shot and there was no way that Ryker or anyone else could keep her from him.

“Kai,” Ryker shouted after her as she took off out of that bedroom. “Don’t go down there.”

“I have to know if it’s Taz,” she shouted back over her shoulder. She didn’t have any clue as to what she was about to walk in on, but she had to know that Taz was safe.

Kai was almost to the basement steps when the two officers stormed in through the front and back doors, practically shoving her out of the way to get to the basement. “Stay here,” the one shouted over his shoulder to her. There was no way that was happening though. Kai followed them both down the stairs and heard the detective shout that everything was clear and for them to call for an ambulance. Her damn heart felt as though it was going to beat out of her chest as she turned the corner to find Taz kneeling over Gabe, covered in blood, holding Gabe’s thigh. Taz was applying pressure to Gabe’s leg, and she let out the breath that she was holding. Taz wasn’t the one who was shot—Gabe was.

“What happened?” she asked.

“He pulled his gun and refused to drop it, so I dropped him,” the detective said. One of the cops took over for Taz and he stood and crossed the room, pulling Kai into his arms.

“I was so worried about you,” she whispered to him. He was getting blood all over her, but she didn’t care. He was safe and that was all that mattered.

“I’m fine, honey,” he breathed. “Although when Gabe had his gun pointed at me, refusing to drop it, I worried that I might never see you again. I was afraid that I might not be able to keep my promise to you and take you to Paris.”

“Don’t forget that you promised to marry me, too,” she insisted.

“Right, I couldn’t forget that promise—ever. I love you, Kai,” he whispered.

“I love you too, Taz,” she said.

“Jesus,” Ryker breathed, “will this mushy crap ever end?”

“Hey—we’re just giving you a taste of your own medicine. You and Harlow were a thousand times worse,” Taz teased.

“Speaking of Harlow, I better go out and call her. She’ll want to know that we found Kai and that she’s safe.”

“Thanks to you both,” she whispered. “I’m safe because of you two. Thank you,” she said. Kai had finally found her happily ever after. She always thought that becoming a teacher would completely fulfill her, but she was wrong. It took a rugged, sexy, Viking biker to do that. Taz had won her heart and now, she’d finally have her happily ever after.

The past two weeks had been a whirlwind of having to answer questions, being dragged back down to the police station for questioning, and finally being able to put the whole Gabe thing behind them. She made Taz the promise that once her case was closed, and they knew that Gabe would be staying behind bars for a while, she’d marry him. She just didn’t think that it would take a full two weeks.

They had gone down to the courthouse to apply for their wedding certificate the day after she was abducted. Taz said that he didn’t want to wait, but it felt weird to her to go through with the ceremony while her life was still in chaos.

When they finally got the all-clear from the detective, she called Harlow to let her, and Ryker know that they were going to be needed at the courthouse the very next morning. She scheduled a time for them to appear before the judge, to exchange their vows, had their two witnesses in place, and all she needed now was the groom.

“Hey,” she said, walking into their kitchen. It was weird to think of Taz’s apartment as theirs, but that was how she was coming to think about his place. “Want to get hitched tomorrow morning?” she asked.

He dropped the pot that he was cleaning into the soapy water and crossed the kitchen, pulling her into his arms with his wet, soapy hands. “I thought that you’d never ask.”

“Taz, you’re getting me all wet,” she protested.

“That’s just the way that I like you, honey,” he teased. “How about a bubble bath?” he asked.

“You really do have a one-track mind,” she grumbled. “I can see why your biker name is Joker,” she said. He chuckled and lifted her into his arms, not seeming to care about her squealing, insisting that he put her down. She had a million things to do before they got hitched in the morning and taking a bubble bath with Taz wasn’t one of them.

“Taz,” she almost shouted, “I don’t have time for a bubble bath,” she insisted.

“Oh, honey,” he said. “There’s always time for a bubble bath and you getting naked.” He let her slide down his body, tugging up her shirt as he went. “Stay put,” he ordered, starting the bathtub, and adding her favorite bath salts to it. He also dumped in some lavender bubble bath to make it nice and soapy, and she shook her head at him as he turned back to her.

“What?” he asked.

“You are beyond bad,” she teased.

“And you wouldn’t want me any other way, would you, honey?” he asked.

“Nope,” she said, “I like my Joker’s Wild, just like you Taz.”

The End
