Chapter Forty-seven

The minute the door closed behind Rylee’s luscious sister, Special Agent in Charge Duke Harrison had the phone in his hand and was calling for an update.

He’d finally gotten through to one of his best on shore, Carl Martinez, a good man who’d worked a lot of cases with Rylee.

“She’s been shot. No! No… don’t you tell me she’s dead.” His roar normally got results, but this time the facts couldn’t be changed. Duke’s timing had been impeccable since they were just minutes past a situation that had turned ugly.

Carl’s voice broke up, but he made out some of the words, “Jake’s swimming out to her body. Others in the cruise liner’s boat are headed in that direction for retrieval.”

“Retrieval? What the fuck are you saying?” His voice dropped. “Carl, what’s happening?”

How the hell could he be the bearer of such horrible news to the woman he’d just fallen for? It didn’t compute. She’d always associate him with her sister’s death. Any chance they had for some kind of a relationship would be doomed.

“Hakim’s guys shoved their boss overboard and are heading their boat in the opposite direction. His robes are dragging him under. He’s disappeared under the water.” Was that glee in Carl’s voice? He couldn’t be sure. The line was rotten.

“No not him. What’s happened to Rylee?”

“She’s headed over to where we saw the last of Hakim, she’s trying to save him. Jake is following.” As Carl described these series of events, Duke started breathing again.
