Chapter Sixty-two

An hour later, after Rylee helped Carl interrogate their prisoners who refused to speak without proper defense, and took her turn to fill in the paperwork, she called her boss to bring him up-to-date on events about their case… and Mari Rae. Holding the phone a foot away, so the vitriol didn’t reach when he revealed his disgust and fear, she admitted to a certain satisfaction.

The man cared about Mari being in the hospital with a minor gunshot wound to her thigh. If the emotion in his voice and the volume it raised was any indication, it really mattered, and that meant the world to Rylee.

“Don’t yell at me, she’s the fool who dove at the guy holding the gun and got shot. No one told her to bite his ankle, so he’d kick her in the face.” Another spiel of fury emanated so she again held the phone away. Once he’d quieted, she added, “You should have seen her acting like a she-bear protecting her cub. It was a moment I’ll never forget. And neither will the asshole in the jail cell.”

Though she knew she shouldn’t poke the dragon, Rylee had to admit to a certain amount of enjoyment in making her boss pay for every time he’d rode over her and put her in her place, which with her attitude, happened far too often.

Finally, because of her new insight into matters of the heart, his suffering came through loud and clear. Backing off, she spoke kindly. “Hey, man, calm down. I just checked, and she’s fine. They gave her drugs, and she’s sleeping like a baby.”

“What the hell is she doing on board the ship? How did she know which one you were on? Did you tell her details about your assignment?”

Affronted, Rylee’s voice hardened. “No, sir. I’ve never revealed critical details about any of my cases, just that I was travelling in the Caribbean, and we’d stop in Grenada. That’s where she boarded.”

“Shit.”

“What?”

“She must have seen the information in the file on my desk and put two and two together. That woman can sure get riled fast.”

“She came to your office?” Rylee grinned and wished she could have been a bug in his rug to have seen her sister at her best. “I’m sorry, sir. She’s a bit headstrong and protective. After I got shot a few months ago, she’s gotten worse.”

“Tell me about it. I’m left fielding her calls when she’s worried that she can’t get through to you. Look, I’ll be at the dock tomorrow to meet the ship. Just tell her I’ll be there, will you, Rylee?”

Not Agent James? Hmmm, the man’s got it bad.

“Yes, sir. I’ll tell her. Should I warn her that you’re a bit upset with her at the moment?”

The silence lasted for long seconds until the smooth as silk reply blasted over the line. “No, goddammit! I’ll let her know myself what I think about civilians interfering in a Federal investigation.”

“Which I’m sure will thrill her.” Rylee lowered the phone, ignoring the loud blast from a man at the end of his tether.
