There was no hesitation in her nod, as she forced his mouth back to hers.

He lifted her up onto the shelf and wedged himself between her thighs, never breaking contact with her mouth. Unzipping his jeans, he lowered them down over his ass, exposing his erect cock. Taking a tiny step back, he yanked a condom from his wallet, tore it open, and slid it over the length of himself. “I’ve been dying to do this,” he said.

“Believe me, so have I.” Jessica lifted her skirt and moved her underwear aside, ignoring the cold wooden shelf beneath her ass. Wrapping one arm around his shoulder, she moved her body closer until she felt the tip of him press against her. She rocked her hips forward and closed her eyes as he plunged inside her body. So deep, so thick, he filled her completely.

The cool air around them made their shallow breaths come out like smoke rings around their heads as he fucked her hard and fast. Desperate, frantic movements causing the shelf to bang against the freezer wall. All the sexual tension between them that had been mounting for days was culminating in the most intense sex of her life.

“I can’t get enough of you, Jess,” he said, his head cradled into her neck. He kissed and sucked along her collarbone and shoulder, and the sensations were almost intoxicating. She tossed her head back, letting her hair fall away from her shoulders, allowing him to kiss everywhere along her skin.

“The feeling’s mutual.” How had she ever lived without this? Since meeting him, he was all she thought about, the only person she wanted to be with, craved him…every single inch. She’d always enjoyed sex, but it was never this satisfying, this fulfilling. She barely knew Mitch, yet when they were together, it felt like she was where she belonged. There was no doubt that they were good together. What the hell was she going to do when he left?

She held tighter, and he seemed to sense her apprehension as he clung to her as well. Pumping in and out of her body, he pulled back to look at her. His expression full of desire, longing…questions…ones she had no answers to, reflecting in those eyes she could stare into forever.

Her breathing was labored as she felt the first ripples of pleasure mounting. His hands on her body held tighter as he moved his hips faster and she felt him grow even harder. They were both so close.

“I need you, Jess,” he said, his voice husky and deep, and she knew he meant more than just physically. She could feel his need for her in his touch, his kiss, his gaze. There had been a different energy coming from him when he’d entered the freezer, obviously on a mission.

She wasn’t sure what he was working through that holiday season, but she knew she was helping him through it.

She just hoped that wasn’t all this was. This chemistry, this connection wasn’t just because he was needing to fill his heart with something other than pain. And that he would still need her once he outran whatever holiday ghost was haunting him.

Chapter Twelve

“You’re really good with that spray can.” Jessica stood back to admire Mitch’s handiwork with the snow-in-a-can an hour later. It took a certain level of finesse and just the right amount of control to apply the white frosting to the windows. But then again, she was quickly learning Mitch had just the right amount of control and finesse in everything he did.

She’d had sex in her walk-in freezer. It still didn’t feel real. She was expecting to wake up any moment passed out in the freezer from a frozen cake falling on her head. The rush of heat that warmed her every time she thought about it had her feeling like she needed to go back in there to cool off. Though, she’d probably never be able to walk in there the same way ever again.

Mitch grinned. “I may have used my share of paint cans in my more delinquent years.”

Jessica feigned shock. “You did graffiti?”

His grin turned into laughter. “As much as I’d love to let you believe I was a bad boy, the truth is, I was on the cleanup crew. I was part of a community volunteer program that turned the less appealing graphics into something more appropriate.”

“So, you’ve always had a charitable spirit,” Jessica said, applying a penguin wearing skates decal to the window next to a polar bear family building a snowman. Hers might not be the most unique or impressive design on Main Street that year, but at least she wouldn’t be the Grinch without a display.

But shewascutting it close with the last-minute dash to get it done. The sun was setting fast and the Night of Lights was scheduled to start in twenty minutes. Already she could see families making their way toward Main Street. Luckily, the tree lighting was first to launch the event, so that would buy them some time.

Either way, she didn’t regret getting “delayed.” In fact, she’d probably abandon this right now and head back to the freezer if Mitch was into it.

“I think it’s in my blood. Dad does a lot of community volunteering,” he said. “And he offers a lot of free services at the clinic.”

“Sad to hear about your dad retiring,” Jessica said. Dr. Jameson had been her family doctor when she was a kid, too. In adulthood, she’d moved to a female gynecologist, but he was always great at accommodating a quick walk-in antibiotic request.

Mitch leaned on the ladder to apply more snow to the corner of the window. “Yeah, it was actually a shock to me, too.”

“Do you think he wants to retire?”

“I think he wants to do the right thing for my mom, but I think if he could continue working, he would.”

“Well, a lot of people will certainly miss him and the practice. His clinic always accommodated early patients and stayed open later than the others in town. And Mrs. P was always so wonderful with the kids. I wonder what she’ll do now. I know she can’t afford to retire yet with her husband’s failing health…”

“Yeah, look, it’s not a great situation all around,” Mitch said, a harshness in his voice Jessica had never heard before.

She frowned up at him as she secured the second penguin to the window. “Did I say something wrong?”

Mitch sighed as he climbed down from the ladder. A look of remorse crossed his features as he ran a hand through his hair. “No. You didn’t. I’m sorry.”

“What’s going on?” she asked, gently, touching his shoulder.
