“So there’s no one special in your life?” Lia asked.

“Um…” Damn, it was easy to lie by omission, but now that Lia was asking her directly, what did she say? Mitch was someone special. Very special. “I…uh…”

Sarah looked to be holding her breath, waiting to see if a train wreck was about to occur. This evening could go sideways very fast.

Her cell phone chimed on the chair next to her leg and, seeing Mitch’s face on the display screen, she picked it up and quickly hid it from Lia’s view.

Mitch:I’d like to know the answer to that as well.

Jessica’s gaze flew upward and she caught Mitch grinning at her from the library. Dressed in a pair of jeans and white T-shirt, his hair messy and his face unshaven, he looked comfy and cozy sitting in a leather armchair with a mystery novel in his lap. Obviously eavesdropping.

“That expression of yours says yes,” Lia said, intrigued.

Jessica forced her gaze away from the window, feeling Mitch’s still on her. “I’ve been dating someone casually. Nothing serious,” she said. Damn, this was going to make it even more awkward if she didn’t confess to Lia right now…

Her phone chimed again.

“Well, looks like Mr. Nothing Serious is missing you,” Lia said.

Mitch:That is one fantastic dress.

Repressing her smile was nearly impossible as she texted back.

Jess:You’re making this secret relationship a lot harder.

Mitch:So let’s tell her.

Her heart raced, and when she glanced back toward the window, Mitch was gone.

She cleared her throat and stood. “Excuse me for a sec. I just have to…”

Lia waved at her. “Go ahead. Go call him,” she said with a laugh. Then turning to Sarah, she sighed. “Young love.”

Jessica moved past Lia and slipped inside the inn. Several guests were checking in and Wes was struggling to explain the keyless, cell phone room entry option to them. Poor guy, technology really wasn’t his thing.

She made her way to the den, but Mitch wasn’t in there. She dipped into the dining room and kitchen but couldn’t find him. Oh no, had he gone outside to talk to Lia? The other woman wasn’t raging through the B&B looking for her yet.

Her phone chimed and her heart quickened as she read.

Mitch:SeaviewRoom. Third Floor. Door’s unlocked.

She glanced outside. The women were still all on the deck, laughing and talking. They wouldn’t miss her or notice how long she was gone, would they? Shit. Could she really do this?

Apparently, her body thought she could as she found herself sneaking past Wes at the check-in desk and up the staircase to the guest bedrooms. She paused outside the Seaview Room, her heart beating so loud Mitch had to be able to hear it from inside.

Jess:Behave yourself. A quick kiss and that’s it.

As she reached for the handle, the door swung inward and Mitch dragged her inside.

Wearing only a soft, plush towel, his hair wet from what was obviously the fastest shower in history, water droplets still on his body, he pulled her into him. His mouth crushed hers with an intensity she’d never felt from anyone before.

His kiss was long and hard and full of desperation, and he was breathing heavy when he pulled back. “Damn, I needed that,” he mumbled against her lips.

“I know the feeling,” she said, wrapping her arms tighter around his neck and pressing her body close. He was getting her dress wet, but she didn’t care. This body of his was definitely top of the list of things she was going to miss about him.

“You were driving me to distraction out there in this sexy dress and those heels…”

At least all the prep that evening to get ready hadn’t gone unnoticed or unappreciated. She swallowed hard as his hands slid the length of her sides, down over her hips. Tingling danced down her spine.
