He strode toward her and wrapped his arms around her waist. He kissed her gently. She pressed her body closer and deepened the kiss, but he reluctantly pulled back.

“We should get back to open the bakery.”

She feigned a sigh. “If we must.”

Five minutes later, they parked the van in the back and Jessica spotted Aunt Frankie waiting outside. “Hey, need a caffeine pick-me-up?” she asked, unlocking the door.

“Nope,” her aunt said with a wide smile. “I’m here to officially put in an order for a wedding cake.”

Jessica’s eyes widened as she held the door open. “Really?” Her friend had finally chosen a design? Whitney hadn’t said anything to Jessica. “Which cake?” she asked, sliding the binder toward her aunt.

Mitch joined them at the counter as Frankie flipped directly to the one she was looking for.

Jessica’s stomach dropped, seeing the three-tier cascade cake.Hercake. She wouldn’t show her disappointment. This was a big deal for her aunt. This was a special moment. If this was the cake Whitney wanted, this was the one she should have.

“This one is absolutely perfect,” her aunt said, beaming.

Mitch nodded his agreement. “Definitely the best one.”

What does he know about wedding cakes all of a sudden?

Jessica cleared her throat and reached for her order pad. “Great, well let’s get this order in for the lucky couple.” She started to write Whitney’s name on the slip, but her aunt stopped her.

“Wrong bride, sweetheart,” Frankie said, emotion evident in her voice. She nodded behind Jessica toward Mitch. “It’s foryourwedding.”

Jessica swung around quickly to see Mitch down on one knee.

Oh my God.

Tears burned the backs of her eyes as he stared up at her. “I was going to wait until Christmas, but I can’t wait any longer to know if you’ll do me the honor of marrying me.” He opened the box, and she gasped upon seeing the beautiful solitary diamond in the center of a white gold set. “Spend the rest of this life with me, Jess. Let’s live it one adventure at a time together?”

She was nodding emphatically, not trusting her voice to speak.

He laughed. “That’s a yes?”

“That’s definitely a yes.”

Her hand shook as he slid the ring on her finger and kissed her palm. She knelt next to him and wrapped her arms around him tight.

“I have no idea how you did it, but you’ve made this Christmas even more special than the last one,” she whispered.

He kissed her gently and stared at her with all the love in his expression. “And I plan to year after year.”

She frowned. “But wait, how did you know that was my favorite cake?”

“Lia might have told me,” he said with a grin.

Jessica’s heart swelled with even more happiness than she ever thought possible. With the love and support from their families, she and Mitch were about to start their lives together. She was finally going to get to make the most special cake for her special day.
