“Good girl,” I praised, and she shuddered with pleasure. “You’re doing so good, baby. Just like that. Ride my cock and make yourself come.”

She obeyed, taking me greedily and claiming me with wild abandon. Her free hand went to her breasts, rolling her nipples between her thumb and forefinger and tugging lightly. My fingers flexed into her hips, beginning to take control of her movements against my cock. I drove into her, forcing myself in to the hilt as I urged her to take more, harder and faster. My own pleasure gathered at the base of my spine, and I gritted my teeth to force it back. She was too breathtaking for me to end this. Her beauty and raw desire stunned me, hitting me square in the chest and making me gasp for breath.

“Max!” Her inner walls rippled around my dick, forcing me to come with her.

I roared out her name and thrust deep, my cock throbbing as I found release inside her velvet heat. Her lips crashed down on mine, and she claimed me with a soul-searing kiss, branding her mark on my heart.

I love you. I made the promise with hungry strokes of my tongue against hers, vowing my love for her with my body, even if I couldn’t say the words.

Allie owned me, body and soul.

CHAPTER 9

Allie

Max’s arm tightened around me, and I stirred with a wince. Despite the small flare of pain on my bruised stomach, I snuggled closer to him. His sigh ruffled my hair, and I closed my eyes again, content to drift somewhere between sleep and wakefulness, allowing myself to feel safe with his strong body cradling mine.

After a while, bright sunlight slanted through a gap in his curtains, rousing us both. He woke and immediately brushed a kiss over my forehead. “You sleep okay, Bambi?” he asked, his voice slightly gravelly and impossibly sexy.

“Mmmhmm,” I replied, leaning into him. I sucked in a sharp breath when my bruised cheek pressed against his hard chest.

He pulled back, frowning down at my injury. “Did the doctor give you any painkillers?”

I nodded, then squeezed my eyes shut. “In the bag by the door.” I’d dropped it as soon as he’d pulled me inside and started kissing me senseless yesterday. After that, I’d been too blissed out to care about my injuries; Max had made sure to flood my system with pleasure for hours before we’d passed out in his bed.

He sat up, and I instantly missed his warmth. But my head was beginning to pound, so I didn’t protest when he retrieved the meds and brought them to me with a glass of water. I took the pills from him and swallowed them down, closing my eyes and willing my mounting headache to subside.

The mattress dipped as he sat down beside me. “You’ll feel better in a few minutes,” he promised, draping his arm over my shoulders.

I sighed and relaxed in his careful hold, content to be near him.

“You’re not going to work today,” he rumbled, as though forestalling an argument. “You need rest.”

I cringed, then groaned when the movement jarred my head. Max knew how important my internship was to me, and I was sure he’d expected me to protest.

Well, it had been important to me. Not anymore.

All the awful memories came flooding back: Mike’s hand on my thigh, his hot breath on my face. It felt like it’d happened weeks ago, not two days. The brutal attack by Max’s cousins had shoved the terrible incident from the forefront of my mind.

Now, my cheeks burned with something between rage and humiliation. Max curled two fingers beneath my chin, lifting my face to his. Dark eyes studied me, creased with confusion as he tried to puzzle out my expression.

“I’m not trying to be controlling,” he said. “I don’t want you to resent me. But I need you here with me.” The last was a desperate rasp.

He’d been shredded by his cousin’s attack. He’d faced the fire for me, had surely endured mental anguish and trauma that would’ve been far more painful than even the burns on his arms.

He needed to hold me and know that I was safe, that we’d both survived the nightmare. And I needed him to hold me, too.

“I know how much you care about your work,” he continued on. “But you need to heal. Don’t go. Not today.”

I placed my hand over his heart. “I’m not going anywhere,” I promised. “I’m not going back there ever again.”

His brow furrowed. “I’ll keep you safe. Whenever you’re ready to go back, I’ll protect you. I won’t let them get to you ever again,” he vowed darkly.

“I don’t want to go back.” My voice was sharp with anger. “There was a reason I texted you to pick me up early yesterday. I’m done with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.”

He tucked my hair behind my ear, black eyes regretful. “I don’t want you to be scared, Bambi. I’ll take care of it.”

“It’s not because I’m scared,” I admitted, confessing the awful truth. “Mike… He came onto me. In his office.”
