“Got it.”

Bringing the phone to his ear, Fletch takes off left while a horde of vans arrive at the park on my right. Immediately, cameras and lights and guys wrestling the equipment flood out of the vehicles. Then Miranda London practically sprints across the park in four-inch heels.

“Shit.”

“Detective Malone!” She rushes toward transport and damn near bowls over the guys working to shield Lana from the cameras. “Is this connected to the other murders we’ve been seeing in Copeland?”

I release Minka’s arm, then stepping forward, I raise my hands and attempt to move the crowd back. “We do not have a statement at this point in time. This is an open investigation, and you’re trampling a crime scene.”

I meet Miranda’s sharp eyes and snarl, “You know the rules. Back up behind the partition or spend the night in a cage.”

“The people have a right to know, Detective Malone!” She doesn’t reverse, despite our chests practically touching. “If we have a serial killer on our hands, the people have a right to know.”

“The victim has the right to a thorough and unimpeded investigation. Until we conduct it, we cannot know what kind of killer we have.”

“So you admit there’s a killer?”

I pause at that and make a face that screamsare you fucking kidding me?“I work in the homicide division, Miranda. Is that not implied?”

“Does this new victim know the prior two?”

“Were there witnesses?”

“Detective Malone!” The woman stands her ground and growls, “Give the viewerssomething. It’s nighttime. It’s cold out. The women in our city are not safe! Can you give them nothing in the way of comfort?”

“I have nothing to say at this point in my investigation.” Reaching forward to place my hand in front of the camera, I look back into Miranda’s sky-blue eyes. “Switch it off. Go away. If you respect my crime scene, I’ll send a statement when I can.”

“Exclusive?”

“Undecided.”

“I want it first,” she demands. “Ten-minute lead on everyone else.”

“Ten minutesbehindeveryone else if you don’t get those cameras off my crime scene.”

“Guys!” She snaps her fingers and calls her team to attention. “Back up.”

“Ms. London?”

She smiles for her main man and simpers as she turns to him. “Continue filming from the other side of the partition. That, we have every right to do.” Then, bringing her gaze back to me, she places her hands on my collar the way she did earlier. She fixes my coat and slides the tips of her fingers along the front of my neck.

Her eyes promise sex and passion and absolutely no call back tomorrow.

Then she stands on her toes and presses a long kiss to my jaw. “I’ll be around, Detective Malone. It’s my right to be in this park tonight, and since I’ll remain close, I’ll be at your disposal, counting down the moments until such time you come looking for me.” Lowering back to her heels, she reaches up and glides her thumb along my jaw as though to wipe away lipstick.

“We’ve always had fun, Archer. Youknowwe work well together.” Her eyes dance with glee as she brings her hand down to rest on my chest. “Remember the good times. Don’t get so caught up in the bad.”

Turning and sashaying away, she beckons the rest of her team with a simple flick of her wrist. I stare a little too long. I watch her when I should be working. And my head tilts to the side in curiosity, because Miranda wears a skirt in the middle of a brutal winter.

When she’s forty feet away, she peeks over her shoulder, and smirks when our eyes meet.

Her ego assures her I’m watching because I want to fuck her, when in reality, I’m making sure she takes her ass to the other side of the police tape and stays off my crime scene.
