‘Well, we’re actually here to tell you that we’ve arrested several suspects in relation. Bail hearing was yesterday and they were refused. They’ll be held separately until trial.’
‘Who? Who was arrested?’
‘A… Rita Finlee and Christopher McArden, attempted murder, kidnap, assault and battery, plus a few drug related charges. Mrs. Renee Finlee for drug related charges and attempted fraud. And a Mr. Timms, for assault and battery, accessory to kidnap, accessory to attempted murder.’
Oh God. Those names have my pulse skittering. Why does my cousin’s name panic me?
‘Timms? John Timms?’
‘You know him?’
‘Yeah, he was a client at my gym. He hasn’t been back in a while. Last I spoke to him, I… fuck.’
‘Last you spoke to him, what?’
‘I dressed him down… for flirting with Kit. Oh, my God, he had something to do with this? Was this my fault?’
‘Yes, he was a part of this. No, it wasn’t your fault. We’ll allege he was the person who attacked Ms. Hart, and then he assisted Ms. Finlee and Mr. McArden in attacking and kidnapping Kit.’
My heart races in my chest and threatens to explode free. The more they talk, the more I remember. Oh God. I was hurt. My arm. I try to move it, but the pinch of pain stops me.
‘We’ll also allege all three, plus the older Mrs. Finlee, did this as revenge, needless revenge. They figure its Kit’s fault they were caught with the insurance stuff, and since they had some bad people looking for them for money, they thought they could try and get it elsewhere. They were coming for you. Your money.’
‘How does Timms connect?’
‘I figure he was just an easy target. A guy with a fresh grudge that they could enlist after leaving your gym. Kit’s attackers saw that and exploited it. When we arrested the first two, they threw Timms under the bus faster than I could ask the questions. They’ve all been charged, and since Isabelle’s case connects with ours, we’ve taken over and relieved the previous investigators of their duties.’
“Is Izzy okay?”
