I reach out to touch Bobby’s strong arm, and his eyes snap down as the muscles bunch and twitch under my hand. “I appreciate that. Truly.” I look up to meet his eyes. “Just let me know if it becomes a problem, and I’ll yank him. It’s not a big deal. And, since you mentioned it, I’ll pay the entry fee and stuff. I’m not poor or anything–”

“Nah, it’s cool. Honest, we almost always tap the fundraising committee for comp fees. He’ll have to pay for his own gear, but don’t bother buying him anything except gloves and a mouthguard. Everything else is temporary stuff that he won’t need after his next birthday, so he can just borrow ours.”

“You’re sure?”

“Definitely. He’ll only use shin pads and head gear for the beginner fights, and if he’s consistent here, he’ll have his development days done by next year, then he won’t need that stuff after that.”

“Alright, thanks. I’ll take him shopping for gloves this weekend. May as well get them sooner rather than later, if I’m gonna buy them anyway.”

“Sounds good. You should buy your own gloves, too. You must be sick of using the communal set by now. They’re permanently soaked in sweat and stink,” he smirks, “and if you’re gonna be covered in anyone’s sweat and stink, I’d rather it was mine. You know, evolution and all that, like pissing a circle around you.”

I laugh. “I’ll buy mine when I buy Jack’s. No need to pee on people.”

He tsks obnoxiously. “You’re missing out.”

“Whatever. I have to go to class now, so I’ll see you later.” I pull my hair from his grasp and step away, but stop and turn back, smirking at his ass-watching eyes. “Oh, before I forget, where are we going for dinner?”

“It’s a surprise. Why?”

“A surprise?” I laugh. “As in, you haven’t planned anything yet, have you?”

“I have, too!” He almost looks hurt that I’d accuse him of such a heinous crime. “Really, I have. Why do you ask?

“I just wanna know how hard I have to work out, you know, to offset the calories.”

He snorts. “One hundred percent every single time, woman. Doesn’t matter what you’re eating later, earn it every time.”

I sigh. “Lame. Whatever, I’m gonna go roll with your brother, now. Catch ya later, alligator.”

His hand comes down on my ass with a resounding crack. “Roll with my brothers, I don’t care. I’m not insecure.” His face changes to mock worry. “Don’t say yes to them, babe. About anything. I’m the smart and sexy brother, and I had first dibs. They can go find their own pretty girl.”

I laugh and walk away with a brand-new ego boost.
