“Do you want to call her?”

“No, babies can’t answer phones, anyway.”

“Ha, smarty pants. Just call her and get it done, because if you don’t stop freaking out and start having a good fucking time, I’m gonna get pissed.”

She rolls her eyes. “You don’t scare me.” At my glare, she sighs. “No, I won’t call. Kit promised she’d call if she needed us. I trust her. I’m here to have a good time.”

“Thank God.”

The server reenters the dining area and sets down two glass bottles and two icy cold drinking glasses, then with a small smile, leaves again.

Iz picks my beer up before I get a chance, smells it, and wrinkles her nose. “Okay, my first taste of beer.” Hesitantly, she brings the bottle to her soft lips and takes a contemplative sip. Snorting barely a second later, she passes the bottle off to me and presses a napkin over her lips. “That was gross,” she giggles.

I pick up my beer and press my lips exactly where hers were a moment ago. “That was your first drink ever?”

She shrugs and takes a sip of the much sweeter cider. “It was my first taste of beer. I’ve had wine a couple times.” She watches me for a moment. “Do you wanna know what I’m thinking about right now?

“Of course.”

She snickers. “Do you remember that time you pulled me off those boys in like, second grade?”

A low growl rips its way up my throat. “Yes. Three pricks against you. Fucking pussies.”

She snorts. “Right. I was thinking about that boy.” When my brow raises in question, she adds, “I smashed his junk so bad, I don’t think I ever saw him walk right after that. I wonder if he ever had kids.”

I take a sip and shake my head. “Dunno. Can’t say I much care.”

“Do you remember walking me home that day? And kissing me?”

“Obviously. That day changed my life.”

Smiling, she runs her finger around the lip of her drink. “Did you like it?”

I blink at her absurdity. “Did I like kissing you?”

She nods and sips. “Yeah.”

“Of course. I got my first boner that day.”

Cider bursts from her lips and dribbles down her chin. “You did not!”

“Okay no, it wasn’t myfirst. But it sure felt good.”

“Stop!” She uses the menu to fan her face. “You’re lying, and you’re embarrassing me.”

I shrug. “Well, I’m not lying, but I’ll stop.”

“Boys are gross.”

I chuckle. “I definitely enjoyed kissing you. That day was the day I transformed from best friend to future husband. I’ve been a tad obsessed with you since.”

She smiles shyly. “Why didn’t you do it again?”

“Bubs…” I sigh. “There were so many reasons.”

“Tell me why.” Her pleading cuts off the moment a waitress walks back in to take our order. Steak and pasta.

Easy done.
