“You slept with my husband! You come to my home, my children’s home, and you think I wouldn’t know? You think I’m stupid enough, or just obedient enough, to allow my husband’s whore to come into our home?”

“I’m sorry.” Sounds lame, but I have nothing else to say.

“No, she’s not. No, you’re not!” Kit steps between us. “She didn’t know!”

Lindsi’s children wail loud enough that Kit has to shout to be heard. The boy looks angry. So very angry. And the little girl has me itching to pick her up to soothe. To cuddle and slow the tears.

I want to pick my ex-boyfriend’s – my baby’s father’s – children up, and I want to hug them.

Then it hits me right in the gut when I realize these children are Bean’s siblings.

Her half brother and sister.

“Izzy didn’t know he was married! She didn’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?” Lindsi jerks her arm in an attempt to free it from Kit’s iron grasp. “So I’ll just believe you guys and walk outta here like it’s no big deal she’s a homewrecking slut?”

Kit’s eyes snap to the doors, then to mine. Back to Lindsi’s. “Youdon’tcall her names, lady. And if you don’t pipe down, the troops will come running. Trust me, you don’t want that.”

“Get the fuck outta he–”

Kit catches Lindsi’s swinging arm a second time. “You need to cool your fuckin’ shit, Lindsi. You need to cool it. Calm your kids, take a fucking breath, and stop hitting my sister. First one’s free. Next one, I’ll start hitting back. Trust me, no one trains as hard as we do. And no one hurts my family and walks away with their face still intact.”

“Fuck you and your bullshit threats. This is none of your business, anyway.”

“Look at your kid!” Kit points at the girl. “She’s freaking out! You’re scaring them.”

“My children wouldn’t be scared ifshedidn’t sleep with married men!”

“Just…” Kit sighs and loosens her hand on Lindsi’s arm. “You just need to relax. I know it’s hard, I know you don’t wanna, but you need to calm down before we get an audience. Your name’s Lindsi, right? I’m Kit. Just breathe a moment, Lindsi, calm your children, and we’ll talk. We aren’t the enemy here, I promise. We’re good people.”

“Good people don’t sleep with married men!”

“She didn’t know!” In a sign of good faith, Kit slowly releases Lindsi’s wrist. “She didn’t know.”

“I find that really hard to believe.” Lindsi bends low and picks up the little girl. She’s older than Bean, but younger than Evie.

“I swear we’re good people.”I’m a homewrecking whore, but I didn’t do it on purpose.“Can I get your kids some juice? Something to eat? Pencils and paper? Then we can talk.”

“I don’t want your fucking kindness! I’m not here to make friends. I did what I came to do. I’m not even here to tell you to stay away from my husband, you deserve each other. Hell, my side of the bed’s empty, it’s all yours. I have to go.”

She hitches her daughter more securely on her hip, then grabs her son’s hand and yanks him along. The kids’ cries echo in the halls as she exits as dramatically as she entered.

“What the fuck?”

“Izzy.” She takes my still face-holding hand. “This isn’t your fault. You didn’t know, and she’s a bitch for hitting you.”

“You’d do the same if it were you.”

“No, I fucking wouldn’t!” My eyes flip from the empty doorway back to hers. “If Bobby cheated on me, I wouldn’t go to his mistress. I’d cut his dick off.His.He’sthe one in the committed relationship. Not the girl. He’sthe liar. Not you.”

“Either way, her marriage is now broken. That’s on me.”

“Yes, her marriage is now broken, but that’s on him! Not you. Hey! Where are you going?”

I jog toward the front doors. “I’m going to talk to her.”

“Why?”
