Jimmy

Capital T For Trouble

Ipull my phone from my pocket as it vibrates –again– and smile as Kit’s name flashes angrily. She’s called almost thirty times in the last hour. Literally. I swipe my thumb across the screen to end the call, and I laugh quietly and wait for the scathing voicemail I know she’ll leave.

She’s getting angrier. I can feel it.

Like a storm swirling in the air, I can feel her wrath.

I’ve had my family together for only a couple hours. We haven’t been ready to share yet, but this is Iz’s show. She chooses what she wants to do, I’m simply her puppet. Lifting my phone and taking a quick picture, I smile as she nurses Bean for the third time in as many hours.

That girl likes to eat.

I capture their gazes of adoration as Bean opens her eyes for only a moment at a time. Love at first sight. It’s real. I knew it was real, and yet, I got to watch it today.

I capture Iz’s messy hair as it curtains her face, chest, and shoulder. And Bean, who’s still naked except for the diaper that stretches almost to her armpits, and the cords that snake away from her. Izzy too, has her own cords. Though I know they’re harmless, it still hurts my heart to see them.

I press the capture button again and again. More photos. I want to document everything, every moment, and I want to keep them in my back pocket for eternity.

My phone flashes with a new voicemail notification, disturbing Iz’s concentration and bringing her beautiful eyes up to mine. I lower my phone in an instant. “Sorry.”

She smiles angelically. “It’s okay. If that’s Belle, tell her we’ll revisit seventh grade again, and I’ll remind her why dating you isn’t on my okay list.”

“I…”What?I laugh. “It’s Kit.”

“Oh.” She snickers playfully. “Why didn’t you answer?”

“I didn’t want to disturb you. I wasn’t sure what you wanted me to tell them.”

Her smile grows. “We should probably tell them they have a new niece, huh?”

She’s as excited to tell them as I am. I can’t fucking wait.

“You’re ready?”

“Sure. They’re gonna flip.”

I dial voicemail first, because I’m curious to hear every scathing word she left for me. I set my phone on speaker and start at the oldest and work my way forward. Sitting back, I let Iz lean her head on my shoulder to rest.

“Jim. Where are you?”Kit’s demanding voice hangs up abruptly.

I hit next when I hear the beep. “Yeah, they’re gonna flip, alright.”

“Jim, answer your phone.”

Beep.“Jimmy, answer your damn phone!”

Beep.“James! I know you rejected my call just then. It didn’t ring long enough.”

Beep.“James. I know you’re there, answer me or I’ll kill you.”

“Damn she’s scary.”

Iz snorts. “Yeah, she’s a psycho. And you’re in so much trouble.”

“James! I’m on your front porch and you’re not home. Where the hell did you sleep last night?”
