She was alone, on her cell phone and glancing over her shoulder as if checking to make sure no one had followed her. She was speaking so quietly Huck almost couldn’t make out what she was saying.

“No, they don’t know anything,” she said quickly. “I promise, no. Look, we’ve only had one day of filming. They haven’t found it yet. We have three months, all right?”

Huck crept close, listening with a frown.

“No. I don’t know.” Janice huffed. “If this goes through, I want my bonus. And yes, I’ll make sure Finn and Cary understand. If they want to be renewed for another season, it will be without Grant.”

“Bitch!” Huck exclaimed heatedly.

“Sir,” Janice snapped at whoever she was talking to on the phone, “you have no idea what I have done to make this happen. I am promising you and the network indisputable proof of the paranormal. I am going to deliver. No matter what it takes. Oh, and when I do, that new office is mine too.”

Huck didn’t think any of that sounded good, especially the part about getting rid of Grant. He had half a damn mind to jab her in the nose or something, but he couldn’t…

Oh.

Huck grinned.

“Yes, sir. Thank you.” Janice was smiling. “I promise I’ll—” She gasped as Huck knocked her phone out of her hand. “Sorry! Dropped my phone!” She frowned, kneeling to grab the phone from the floor, calling to it, “One sec!”

Huck swatted it away just before Janice could reach it.

“Oh!” Janice jumped, more startled now. She looked all around with wide eyes, clearly not seeing Huck, but then she asked quietly, “Sir… is that… is that you?”

“Sir?” Huck scoffed. He checked the hallway to see if there was anyone else here he wasn’t aware of, but it was still just the two of them. He didn’t understand who Janice thought might be here messing with her.

Janice appeared more cautious than before, and she hadn’t tried to pick the phone back up again. She was acting like she was waiting for something.

Huck wanted to stay and figure out what was going on, but he wasn’t sure how much time he’d already wasted messing with her. There weren’t any windows in the hallway here, and he didn’t want to risk missing Mrs. Charles’s ding or his date with Grant. He hurried on, though he did steal one last glance back at Janice.

Janice had picked up the phone and went right back to her snotty conversation, saying, “Yes, I’m here! Now, do we have an agreement or not?” She sounded like she was smiling when she said, “Excellent.”

Huck definitely needed to tell Grant about that, but first he needed to go take care of Mrs. Charles. He headed to the dining room, and he found Finn and Cary were here eating dinner.

Naturally, Precipitation was here as well.

While Finn and Cary were seated and chatting over some fast-food burgers, Precipitation was posed at the table next to them, sighing longingly as he watched them eat.

Precipitation noticed Huck coming in, saying, “You know, I’ve never wanted to be a cheeseburger before, but ohhh… To be a slab of meat held so tenderly in their gorgeous hands, just waiting to be devoured.” He sighed again. “Death is such a bitch.”

“Oh.” Huck stopped short, unsure if he should share his good news or not.

Precipitation snapped his fingers. “Come on. Out with it. You’ve been gone all day, you know. I hope you managed to accomplish something in that time.”

“Well, I wasn’t… uh.” Huck fidgeted.

“Sweetie, spill.” Precipitation smiled kindly. “One of us getting devoured is better than none. So, were you successful? Is flesh back on the menu?”

“Yes!” Huck couldn’t hold back now. “You were right! It totally fucking worked!”

“Of course it did.” Precipitation paused. “Which thing exactly?”

“The sculpting! Okay, so I didn’t sculpt exactly, but I did a carving! I can totally do this ghost thing now! Oh! And it gave me an amazing awesome surprise to share with Grant later!”

“Brilliant! I hope it was something juicy and erotic?”

“No.” Huck snorted. “But I think he’s gonna like it. Thank you, Sip. You’re totally like my subway ghost.”

“Pardon?”
