“Okay, that’s freaky. Real nice that she left that off her tour. Finn will be heartbroken. I think he actually kinda likes her.” Cary snorted and chomped down on the toast.

“I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not, but no, that’s not even the really freaky part.”

“Wha?” Cary asked through the toast.

“Janice? She’s Myrna’s daughter.”

“Huh?” Cary nearly choked, and his face flushed as he struggled to swallow his food.

“Whoa!” Huck gasped. “He’s literally red as a tomato right now. Is he okay?”

Grant shrugged helplessly at Huck, and then he clapped his hand across Cary’s back. “She’s Myrna’s daughter, okay? She was probably here when the cult killed those people!”

“What?” Cary wheezed, coughing into his hand. “And you’re sure?”

“Yes!”

The kitchen door swung open, and Finn stomped in to fix them both with a grumpy glare. “Here you are. Now. This is the part where I say no, I’m not mad, I’m just very disappointed.”

“Hey, you gotta hear this,” Cary said quickly. “It’s about Janice.”

“I know Janice is not anyone’s favorite person, least of all mine,” Finn said, “but she is still our producer. If she continues this behavior, I made sure she knows that I will be calling—”

“She’s Myrna’s daughter!” Cary cut in, ever impatient. “Okay? Crazy lady who’s super hot for you? That Myrna? She was in a cult and Janice is her kid!”

“And how do we know that?”

Grant waved.

“That…” Finn blinked. “That is a very unique weather report.”

“Right?” Cary snorted dryly. “Now we know how we got into the damn hotel. We had some good ol’ fashioned nepotism workin’ for us and didn’t even know it.”

“While that is an interesting revelation, what do we do with this information?” Finn quirked his brows. “Is there something I’m missing?”

“I think…” Grant fidgeted.

Huck squeezed his arm, urging, “You got this, baby.”

“I think she’s up to something,” Grant said more confidently. “She didn’t tell us about her mom, and she and Myrna both tried to hide the history here with the cult. I do not believe for a second Janice didn’t know about it. As our producer, that would be exactly the kinda thing she’d want us to know to talk about on the show and amp up ratings. I can’t explain it exactly, I have zero evidence, but I just know in mysoulthat she is planning something awful and it has to do with the Thing in the Stairs.”

Finn and Cary exchanged frowns, and Grant’s heart thumped uncomfortably. He couldn’t tell if they believed him or not, and—

“Then we’ll just have to keep her busy until you figure out what it is,” Finn said at last.

“Wait, you believe me?” Grant hated that he was so surprised. “Really?”

“Of course we do.” Finn placed an awkward hand on Grant’s shoulder that was certainly meant to be reassuring. “We trust you, Grant. Always.”

“You’ve never steered us wrong on fuckin’ anything.” Cary smiled warmly. “You say Janice is bad news, that’s it.”

“Thank you.” Grant beamed. “So much.”

“Fuck yeah!” Huck cheered in a hushed tone as if he was worried Finn and Cary might hear him. He rubbed Grant’s back. “See? You got it.”

Grant casually reached his hand back to touch Huck’s arm, rubbing his thumb over his wrist as a thank you for the encouragement.

“We should file a complaint with the Human Resources Department about her behavior.” Finn tapped his chin thoughtfully. “She’s been erratic and her attitude toward Grant is unprofessional.”
