“She’s a bitch to him,” Cary said flatly.

“Right?” Grant sighed and leaned back against the counter. “I never did anything to her. I don’t get it.”

“Fuck if I know. But she’s gonna learn one way or another that there’s no PP crew without you.”

“Thanks.”

“PP crew?” Finn wrinkled his nose.

“Hell yeah.” Cary grinned. “We’re gettin’ shirts.”

“No. What we are going to do is file a formal complaint through HR while Grant investigates the Thing in the Eastern Stairs—”

“Uh, no,” Huck cut in, even though no one could hear him. A plate on the counter beside him rattled. “That’s a very terrible idea!”

Grant gave him a pleading look, and he tried to lean into Huck’s side to comfort him and make it look like he was the one who had moved the plate. He didn’t want Finn or Cary realizing there was someone else here.

“—and see if there’s a connection between it and Janice,” Finn continued on without noticing. “It’s far too convenient that Janice just so happened to bring us here to the same hotel where her mother’s cult worshiped and was also dishonest about their relationship. Yes, it is a famously haunted location that many investigators would love to have exclusive access to, but I do not trust her motivations.”

“If coincidences are just coincidences, why do they feel so contrived?” Cary said in an eerily sage-like tone.

“Isn’t that… anX-Filesquote?” Grant asked.

“Hell yeah.” Cary nodded firmly. “Fox Mulder knew what was up! This is majorly suspicious. I just wish we knew what she was doing.”

“Well, she might be trying to finish what the cult started,” Grant said. “When they didn’t get picked up to go to whatever paradise it was, their leader started killing people for the Thing. The ghosts told me it was for a vessel, like maybe they were trying to let it out and take over one of them.”

“Inhuman possessions are rare, but not unheard of.” Finn frowned. “Perhaps they were trying to break whatever is holding the spirit in the stairs and act as a host.”

“By killing people?” Grant frowned. “I mean, most possessions are always ruled out as hoaxes, and I’ve never heard of anyone attempting one like this. I can’t imagine who wouldwantto be possessed.”

“Hey!” Cary patted Grant’s back reassuringly. “Don’t worry about it. We got this. You’re our secret sneaky weapon. With a bunch of ghosts helping you, it shouldn’t take us long to figure out what’s going on, right?”

“Yeah, totally!”

Except totally not.

Weeks went by in a flash, and the rotation of filming and reviewing spun quickly. The crew caught chair movement, exciting EVPs, and a door opening and closing on its own. It was fast becoming one of their most successful investigations, though Grant was having much less luck figuring out what Janice was up to.

Even with three ghosts helping him, her true intentions remained elusive.

Precipitation and Rebecca were not reliable spies as they easily got distracted and would lose track of Janice. Huck was much more vigilant, but he didn’t pick up much except additional phone calls to the QuikTV executives. Only being able to listen to one side of the conversation didn’t help much. The HR Department did question her about her behavior toward Grant, which she denied of course, and she was ultimately given a verbal warning and had to take some sort of online class about harassment in the workplace.

Grant was starting to think they weren’t going to figure it out, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that they were running out of time.

Maybe it was just him, but he swore that the pulsing of the Thing was getting louder.

Grant could sense the Thing reaching out for him at random times, like the pawing of a curious cat who was trying to decide if he was food or not. He blocked it out as best as he could, and Finn and Cary made sure that they didn’t film near the Eastern Staircase or allow anyone to be there alone.

Janice had tried to suggest that they film a few segments there, and Finn brushed her off by saying that they’d wait to do that later on in the season.

Today was a filming day, and Huck had taken it upon himself to start off the day with a passionate blowjob that left Grant’s toes curling. Huck was definitely a giver and he seemed to love pleasuring Grant. Grant adored the attention, but there were often issues reciprocating—like Huck’s cock suddenly vanishing from Grant’s mouth or from his fingers.

Huck would get so caught up in the moment that he couldn’t stay solid enough for Grant to finish him, but he insisted that he still enjoyed himself. They hadn’t progressed to penetrative sex yet, though Huck had certainly made good use out of the vibrator and dildo that Grant had brought with him.

Neither one of them was in any rush, and Grant loved the unhurried pace. Everything was happening so naturally, slow and sweet, and he couldn’t imagine his life without Huck now. That still left some big questions unanswered, like what were they going to do when the show was done filming, but Grant didn’t want to think about that.

He was focused on planning something special for tonight to celebrate their one month anniversary, and he had other things to worry about—like dealing with Janice and the Thing in the Eastern Stairs.
