Desperate and terrified of what was going to happen next, Huck did the only thing he could think of:

“Ding!”

Instantly, the trembling stopped and Mrs. Charles smiled again. “Ah! Yes, it’s time for dessert!”

Grant sagged in his chair. “Holy fuck me.”

“Fuck me twice.” Huck groaned. “Is it possible to have a fucking heart attack when you’re already fucking dead?”

“I’m sorry! I didn’t think all that was going to happen!”

“Now you know why we go fucking ding!”

“No shit!”

Huck waited until he was absolutely sure Mrs. Charles was returning to her meal before he said, “So, can we talk about one, how weird that was, and two, how fucking extra weird is it she just happened to say the one word we wanted to know about?”

“I guess just as weird as you overhearing the stuff about Myrna and Janice tonight because otherwise we wouldn’t have been in here to talk to Mrs. Charles.” Grant’s brow wrinkled. “Something about this just feels… wrong.” He rubbed his forehead and sighed. “Ugh.”

“Are you all right?” Huck reached out to touch Grant’s shoulder.

“I’m okay, baby.” Grant offered a little smile, but it was very strained. “Just a headache.”

“Do you just wanna go to bed tonight?” Huck hated seeing Grant so distressed. “I could leave you alone, let you get some rest?”

“No.” Grant’s smile grew more genuine. “Definitely no.”

“Definitely?”

“Because I have special plans for us tonight.”

Huck laughed. “Special, huh? What? No moreWalking Deadmarathon? I swear, I’m not gonna yell at the phone like I did when Rick Ricked everything up.”

“Me, you, Captain’s Quarters, midnight.” Grant’s smile was now downright sly. “I have a surprise for you, but you have to do exactly as I say, okay?”

“Oh, really now?” Huck was suddenly very excited for whatever it was Grant was up to. He hadn’t seen Grant in such a mischievous mood before, and it looked very good on him. “Am I gonna need a safe word?”

“Well, depending on how the evening goes?” Grant winked. “You just might.”

“For the record, it’s Pinocchio.”

CHAPTER11

Grant

Grant had everything worked out for tonight, right down to how he was going to make sure Huck didn’t lose time and risk missing the special evening he had planned for them. Grant was going to leave his phone up in his room, have Huck wait in there, and the phone had an alarm set for midnight.

Huck was skilled enough now with his ghosting abilities that he’d be able to turn off the alarm. There would be no risk of anyone passing by and potentially hearing it blaring and wanting to know where Grant was when he didn’t answer the door.

It wasn’t hard to convince Aurora that they should call it quits for the night. She was already out the command center door before Grant even finished suggesting that they pick the evidence review back up tomorrow. He did check in with a very exhausted sounding Finn and an only slightly drowsy Cary to make sure he was really in the clear, and then after leaving Huck with the phone, Grant sprang into action to get ready.

Tonight was their one month anniversary, and Grant had made up his mind last week that he was going to make this an evening that neither one of them would ever forget. Even though he was still concerned about the Thing in the Eastern Stairs and however Janice was involved with it, he really wanted this to be special. He knew Huck had been busting his butt trying to help him figure it out, and Grant couldn’t wait to show him how grateful he was.

Some of it was fairly easy, like gathering the ingredients for proper s’mores and hoarding extra blankets and pillows.

And then some of it, not so much.

Like dragging an old mattress out of a storage room and then up the stairs to the Captain’s Quarters by himself because he couldn’t ask anyone else to help him or risk having to answer some weird questions.
