The worst part was figuring out how to remove the tarp from the busted roof, and it involved a big ladder, a lot of praying, and a broom.

Grant had decided he’d worry about putting it back later.

For this date to be truly perfect, he wanted to give Huck the stars.

Huck had talked about stargazing often enough for Grant to know how much he’d loved it and how much he missed it. With the tarp gone for now, Grant got the mattress made up with the extra linens he’d been squirreling away and then created a s’mores buffet with extra bits like caramel and chocolate marshmallows.

Everything was ready with thirty minutes to spare.

Exhausted, Grant flopped down on the mattress to take a quick break. He was bubbling with nervous excitement, and he really hoped Huck enjoyed the big surprise. The sky was only a tad cloudy tonight, and even so the view of the stars was absolutely stunning.

Grant was startled by a tender touch of a hand on his cheek, and he opened his eyes as he realized he must have fallen asleep.

Huck was stretched out beside him, smiling and caressing his face. “Hey, baby.”

“Hey.” Grant rolled over on his side so he was facing Huck. “Uh, surprise?”

“Yeah, very big surprise.” Huck’s grin was brighter than the stars twinkling up above them. “Was not expecting this. Like, at all. You really did this for me?”

“Sure did.” Grant beamed. “I got s’mores, the real stuff, plus a big night sky full of stars.”

“You’re amazing.” Huck kissed him. “Absolutely amazing.”

“Mmm, you’re pretty amazing too, you know.”

“Says the very hot medium to the very dead ghost.”

“Hey, you’re hot.”

“For a dead guy?”

“For any guy.” Grant grinned. “I wouldn’t do this for just anybody, you know.” He laid his hand over Huck’s on his face, and he smiled as their energy surged together. It was a rush he found so comforting now, a unique sensation that was theirs alone to share.

Huck’s hand and arm were solid, and the skin of his face shimmered as his head and part of his upper torso solidified. He snuggled in close and kissed Grant’s brow. “Thank you. For everything.”

“Thank you. This has been the most incredible month of my life.” Grant stifled a yawn. “And sorry I almost missed our date. Damn, I didn’t mean to fall asleep.”

“Aw, it’s okay, baby. Almost didn’t wanna wake you up. You just looked so cute.”

“Sweet talker.” Grant grinned.

“The sweetest.”

“So.” Grant nodded toward the open sky above them. “What’s up there tonight?”

“Stars.” Huck winked.

“Very funny. Come on.” Grant rolled onto his back. “Tell me everything.”

“You got it. Okay, here we go.” Huck laid beside Grant and reached down to take his hand. “Oh, see that swirly sort of stuff? Totally the Milky Way.”

“Yeah! I can see it. That curved bit up there, sort of looks like a cloud?”

“That’s it!” Huck beamed. “Even though it looks like an arch, the Milky Way Galaxy is actually shaped like a pinwheel with hundreds of billions of stars. It’s a big spiral with all these arms. And oh! There, there!” He pointed excitedly. “Did you see that?”

“What?” Grant tried to follow Huck’s finger.

“Keep looking… We’re in August, aren’t we?”
