“Purified?” Grant cut in. He wanted to keep her talking while he tried to figure out how the hell he was going to get out of here. He had to stall for as long as he could. Certainly Huck would be looking for him, and Finn and Cary eventually too. “You mean with splinters and shit from the stairs?”

Janice actually looked offended. “You fool! It is notshit. That’s the flesh of a living god!”

“In the form of a splinter.”

“Once Baus has been reborn, his flesh will be transformed—”

“It’s one step away from wood chips, you know.”

“Shut up!” Janice howled. “Don’t you dare talk about Baus’s godly flesh like that!”

“Godly wood pulp, you mean.”

“You listen to me, you little shit! Baus has everything he needs now except you!” Janice took a deep breath, visibly trying to calm herself. “I used to dream about Baus calling to me when I was a child, but I wasn’t sure if any of it was real. But then I heard him again. I heard Baus calling to me four years ago. It was destiny that brought me back here. I’ve worked so hard and for so long to reach this very moment and free my master. Everyone will be in the morgue investigating as planned, and they won’t even notice you’re missing for a few hours. You’re going to surrender your body to Baus, and then I am going to serve him in eternity.”

“No fuckin’ way.” Grant curled his hands into tight fists, and he focused his power there. Just as he used his energy to reach out to Huck, maybe he could use it to find a weakness in this horrible haze he was trapped in and break out of it.

He just fucking had to.

Whatever the mysterious haze was, it felt spiritual in nature—a hell of a lot stronger than any other he’d experienced before, but still.

Maybe this could work.

“You don’t have much of a choice,” Janice drawled. “This will be over long before Finn and Cary and the others wonder where you are, and I already sent lots of little surprises for your ghost boyfriend and his buddies.”

“What?” Grant’s blood froze.

“I’m sorry, did I stutter?” Janice laughed. “Huck, Precipitation, and that silly actress? Yes, I know all about them.”

“But how?” Grant demanded. “None of the ghosts even knew you were a medium because you’re so fucking weak!”

“Petty insults are a bit childish, don’t you think?” Janice snorted. “It wasn’t hard to listen in while you idiots just blabbed away thinking no one else could hear any of you. And when I needed more power, I had Baus there to help me.” She pretended to pout. “Shame no one is coming to help you.”

“Hey, what the fuck did you to Huck?” Grant snapped furiously. “Is he okay? Where is he?”

“Does it really matter? Grant, you’re about to be reborn as the vessel of a god.” She clicked her tongue. “Maybe you should worry about yourself a little bit more.”

“What did you do to Huck?” Grant demanded again. He didn’t feel any variance in the red haze, finding it solid and powerful.

No weak spots, no inconsistencies, no nothing.

He didn’t think he had enough energy to break it, and he had no idea if that was even possible. He had used his energy to push back at aggressive spirits before, and he had hoped that could be an option to escape whatever this weird room was.

Shit, shit, shit.

“Nothing much.” Janice chuckled. “Just summoned all the shades out of the morgue to go after his friends. I couldn’t have him following me, and I know they’re very important to him. It doesn’t take a lot of energy to get the shades motivated, you know, and I’m sure they’ve taken care of your little boyfriend by now too. He won’t even know his own name once they’re done dragging him down—”

“Fuck you!” Grant seethed.

He hated this feeling of helplessness, and he was worried about Huck. He cared so much about him, more than he had about anyone else in the whole world, and fear was cutting into his bones and making him shake. He couldn’t imagine a single moment of his life without Huck in it now—his laughter, his smile, the touch of his hands, the soft press of his lips, the twinkle of the stars in his eyes while they made love…

No.

Nothing could happen to Huck, not before he had a chance to tell him how much…

The thrumming was louder now, and there was a shape forming within the haze.

Fuck.
