“Probably.” Grant smirked, watching Huck’s eyes drifting back up to the stars once more. He already knew what Huck wanted. “So, stay out here a few more minutes?”

“Yeah, just a few more.” Huck cuddled in close. “Then I swear we’ll go in and get a shower or something.”

“We can stay out here all night if you want.”

“Are you sure?”

“As long as I’m with you, I don’t care where we are.”

Thunder rumbled overhead from the clouds coming in, and Grant flinched as a single drop of rain hit his cheek. Another followed, and then another, and another roar of thunder signaled a sudden downpour.

“Okay! I lied!” Grant quickly sat up, trying to grab his clothes. “I do care if it’s raining!”

“Shit!” Huck laughed as he scrambled to help. “Thought you wanted a shower, baby?”

“Not like this!”

More thunder crashed, and a bolt of lightning zinged across the clouds and down into the trees by the end of the driveway leading up to the cabin.

“Fuck, that was really close.” Huck’s eyes widened.

“Yeah, uh—” Grant jumped when a second bolt struck, and he swore this one was even closer than the first. “Time to go!”

Clothes in hand and wearing nothing but smiles, they bolted to the cabin door. They were drenched in seconds, and Grant had to fight with wet fingers to get the key into the lock so they could get inside.

The door opened, and that was precisely when they both remembered they’d forgotten someone.

“Mandy!” Huck grimaced.

“Oh no.” Grant tried not to laugh as Huck had to bolt back into the rain.

Mandy had woken up, probably disturbed by the storm, and she was staring at them through the truck window. She appeared very concerned.

Huck sweet talked to her as he opened the door, trying to use his shirt to cover her up to shield her from the rain.

She did not like that and promptly ran back to her bed.

Huck groaned in frustration. He then folded the sides of the bed to effectively make a cat taco and grabbed her, bed and all. He ran back to the porch, cradling the bed against his chest and shouting, “Go, go, go!”

Grant did laugh then, dropping his wet clothes as they fled to the bedroom.

The storm raged on, and the lights flickered before going off completely.

Grant dove into the bed first, and then he lifted up the blankets for Huck to join him. Huck hurried in and dropped Mandy in between them. They snuggled up close, trying to get warm and laughing.

Mandy wiggled out of her taco prison, yowling in protest until she managed to get out from the covers. She found a spot on the corner of the bed and laid down with her back to them.

“I think she’s mad at me.” Huck tossed the cat bed over his shoulder.

“I’m sure she’d be a lot more mad if we left her out there.”

Huck laughed as he snuggled in close. “Yeah, probably.”

Lightning flashed outside, and Grant got a quick glimpse of Huck’s brilliant smile.

“You know,” Grant said, “this is perfect weather for s’mores and ghost stories.”

“Well, I think we ate all the marshmallows, but I do know a great ghost story.”
