“You’ll be the best father,” I respond, and he leans up and kisses me. When he pulls away, I laugh at the mischievous look on his face.

“So, about my tongue—”

“Ew, Cato!” Noya calls as he rushes into our nest. “Auntie Tally, will you read to us now?”

“Of course, my favourite boy,” I promise as I clamber to my swollen feet with Cato’s help.

“I thought I was your favourite.” Cato huffs, mock glaring at Noya. “Do I need to fight this little beast for the title?” He holds up his hands and starts to fake swipe, and Noya squeaks and runs away. With a wink at me, Cato hurries after him.

Boys.

Looking down, I smile at my round stomach. “Please be a girl. I need the backup.” I giggle, and there’s a kick, and my smile widens. “You will be so loved, so very loved. I can teach you about science, and Aria can teach you to shoot. Akuji can teach you how to punch, and Cato can chase all the boys away. The world is waiting for you, and whatever is to come, you will always be protected and happy, no matter how this war ends.”

I waddle downstairs to my people, to my family and friends, the future of our races held in my belly.
