I’m surrounded by people I don’t know. Feeling overwhelmed I place my hands in my lap, so they don’t see me fidgeting. Servants, or who I think are servants, begin to fill the room and place food in front of us. The silence is awkward.

“Okay, I have to ask, who is my father. I mean my sperm donor?” I know my face is red as I ask, the heat creeping up my neck as all eyes turn to me. “Also, it would be cool to know names, because this is awkward.”

“I’m Cassius, your mother’s first mate, next to you is Marcus,” he points to the end of the table, “That’s Lougheed, and the man sitting to your mother’s right is your ‘sperm donor’ Lucius.” He likes to talk with his hands I noticed, must get annoying for mother. “But you’ve always called us all dad.”

He looks almost sad, remembering things from my childhood, I can’t place seeing them ever in my life, must be part of the spell they put on me when they gave me up. I poke at the food in front of me as everyone else digs into their meals.

“Whatever happened to the man that hurt me?”

An awkward silence follows my question, “Is he at least locked up?”

“Yes,” Cassius answers me. “You’re safe from him until you wish to see him.”

I snort, “Why on earth would I want to see that man ever again?”

“You have four weeks to get used to this mate before your next one arrives, that mate call will be much better, I promise, you’ll be bursting at the seems to get to him.” The way Lilith talks about my second mate makes me wonder if she felt that way about her own mates.

“Get used to him? Are you nuts?”

“Raven, calm down, it’s going to happen.” Marcus declares next to me, almost as if he’s demanding I shut up and suck it up.

Narrowing my eyes at him I snarl. “Dude, I don’t know you, apparently you’re one of my dad’s, but I’ve spent my whole life without you, you don’t get to tell me what to do.”

“That’s enough!” Lucius finally chimes in. “We get you’re upset and angry but going about it like this isn’t going to help anything. Your mother and we love you, beyond anything in the world. We did what was best for you. You can continue to hold that over our heads for the rest of our lives if you choose, but it doesn’t say much about you now does it?”

I swallow thickly. He’s right. “I’m sorry.” I quietly reply to the room. “This is just so much, I’m overwhelmed, everything is coming at me at once and I can’t seem to catch a break.”

“We understand. We’re trying not to rush you along, but you have to understand, this war isn’t going to wait for you to get with the program. And fast.” He tells me.

I chew on my bottom lip for a moment, “Where is he locked up?”

“In his rooms.” Cassius informs me.

“I’ll stop being a brat if you get rid of him.” I’m pouting and three of my father’s look amused while Cassius just looks annoyed.

“No, we will not be getting rid of anyone, what he did isn’t punishable to us because it was his mating call pulling him towards you. Not something sick and twisted like you think, once you come into yourself, you’ll understand that. Hell if not before. You need to get to know him, little bird.”

Swallowing again, I look to Lilith. “Can he at least be kept in a dungeon or something, not his room? I don’t want to chance running into him any time soon, I need time.”

“That can be arranged.” She gestures to someone, “Simo, please give wolfsbane to our guest upstairs, slip it into his nightly drink or something, find a way, then escort him to the dungeons.”

“Yes Oracle.” He dips his head then looks to me and bows. “My Queen.”

I blink rapidly, that is something I don’t think I’ll ever get used to. “Now, lets just talk and get to know each other. What is something you’ve always wanted but never done?” Lilith asks me as she digs into her meal.

I shrug, “Honestly, Ravenna always let me do anything I wanted. My main goal has always been to completely take over the shop for Ravenna one day, but I doubt that is going to happen now.” Especially with all this Queen talk.

“Nonsense. Once the war is over with, I’m sure you could keep the shop going, that is if Ravenna gives it to you.” Marcus tells me.

I shrug. “I feel like I have so much to learn I don’t know if I’ll have time. If I’m going to be Queen, what does that all entail?”

Chapter 13

Dagan

I wake up groggy, the taste of wolfsbane in my dry mouth, where the fuck am I now? Bars, all I see are bars. “Oh good, you’re up.” Lilith greets me and gets up from her chair where she was knitting, probably a scarf or some shit.

“Why am I locked up?” I growl.
