"Right. Can I see James and Ryan? They saved my life."

He nodded. "As soon as James is out of surgery, sure. And Ryan, I think the doc has him resting, but when he gets up, I'm sure he'd like to see you and know that you're okay."

"And Saint. You said Saint had to talk to someone. Who is he talking to?"

Lachlan's wide-open smile shuttered. He was still smiling, but now there was a mask. "Don't worry about that right now. You just worry about feeling better. And don't worry about your friend, Gemma. We sent some people to watch her.She was brought here from class and was already here when you got here."

"Where is here?"

Again, the masked look. "I'm going to let Saint and Gabe explain that to you."

"Who the fuck is Gabe, and why should I care?"

He guffawed. "I knew I liked you."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"As Saint’s best mate and someone who told him to tell you everything, I want to see the look on your face when he explains it all."

My brow furrowed as Lachlan King scooted out of the room. Then the door swung open again, and another man walked through. He was slightly older. Late twenties, maybe early thirties. Also stupidly handsome. Like honestly, it was ridiculous. He had a sharper nose though, and deep set eyes. Dark hair, and his eyes were a startling, piercing green. Like the kind of electric green you saw in anime drawings of heroes.

"Miss Reynolds."

"You can call me Kaya."

"I'm Gabe Webb. You're in Abott manor."

"A manor? That's fancy."

He surprised me with a chuckle, as if it didn't happen often, but it made him look younger. Like a perfectly normal handsome man that you would meet out and about, and you would be flustered when he spoke to you. "Abott. Abott?" My brain started to go through a string of people. "Saff Abott. Are you married to her? I thought she was engaged to Lachlan King?"

He laughed then, and he looked really young. The quick flash of dimple was startling. Good lord, the man was handsome. It didn't do much for me, but I could see Gemma legitimately drooling. "She's my sister."

My brows lifted. "Adopted, right?"

He laughed. "Yeah, I think that's pretty obvious."

With her onyx skin and his missing melanin, it was the only assumption I could make. "Where is Abott manor, and what am I doing here?"

It was then that Saint walked in. "I've got it, Gabe. I should do it."

I tried to prop myself up, but my shoulder screamed in agony.

I glanced down at it and frowned when I noticed the sling. "What the fuck?"

Saint came over. "Hey, relax. Just lay back. You dislocated your shoulder."

How had that happened? I'd been fighting, and then, ugh… Someone got a hold of me. And then Saint was there, and he was… I had missed something.

What was I missing?

Saint sighed. "Your shoulder has been aggravated. We've reset it, but it's going to hurt for a few days."

"What is going on?"

Gabe's grim expression was back, and he looked like a recalcitrant father. Like he was about to deliver some bad news I did not want to hear.

It was like someone unlocked the barriers of my brain and I remembered. With a glare toward Saint, I tried to scoot away from him. "You shot me."
