"Okay, I look like her. So what?"

"You look exactly like your mother, and you walked up to the last man to see her alive. Did you think he wasn't going to recognize you and know who you must be? He alerted people. Antonio Igno had been looking for her for years. I thought hewas looking for you, but I think now, he might have been looking for her instead. I'm not sure."

"Well, I don't have anything of hers except some papers and apparently a property she left for me in Croatia. But nothing else. I don't know anything."

"Well, I'm sure you know more than you think you know."

"I don't. I just want to go back to my life."

He leaned forward then. "You and I know there is no going back to your life. No returning to before times. There is only forward. The choices you make now determine where you get to go from here. Your mother was a good agent. Respected. If my father helped her, it's because he cared about her deeply. From what I hear, she was one of the best, and she obviously taught you a lot of what she knew."

"So what? You want to use me?"

"No. But Oversight might want to, so I want to keep your being here as quiet as humanly possible. In the meantime, we find out what Igno wants with you, and what Lohman wants with you."

"I did this? I started this whole hunt-me-down thing? Who or what the hell is Oversight?"

Gabe shrugged. "Oversight is who I report to, but there are no names, just a department."

"My chatting up Connor Lohman started all this?"

He nodded. "But I have to think Saint is right. Lohman's men, Igno's men, they're not trying to kill you. They're trying to take you as far as we can tell. So right now, our entire job is to keep that from happening."

"I don't want any of this."

"Well, tough shit. It’s happening."

"I just want to go back to the day before the auction."

His face was grim. "One more time from the top. There. Is. No. Going. Back. You have a choice to make. Are you going torun, or are you going to fight? I didn't know your mother, but I know what she would want you to do."

CHAPTER 36

SAINT

I paused outsideof Gabe's office, my arms resting on the door frame. I had cocked this up completely. Absolute fucking mess. Now I had to walk in there, look her in the eye, and say that I knew I had fucked the whole thing up. She was pissed and rightfully so.

Fucking hell. What was there to say? ‘Hey Kaya, while I was busy falling for you, I may have lied about everything. Sorry, mate.’ I was so fucked. So I just opened the door, ready and willing to take whatever bullshit was coming my way.

When I opened the door, she was sitting on the couch, leaning forward.

"Hey, Sprite, are you okay?"

She was rocking back and forth. "I don't know. I suppose so. How do you want me to answer that?"

Fuuuuuck. This was bad.

"You are a liar."

"I am. I wish I could say I’m sorry, but I can't."

"So you just lied and that's okay?"

"No. It's not okay. I just want you to know I didn't mean to hurt you."

"But you did. You, not the guys chasing me and shooting at me. You, Jasper Saint hurt me."

I stepped forward, closing the door and pressing the lock behind me. God help me if anyone of them came running through looking for Gabe. Gabe had already told me to come talk to her and that he'd leave us alone for a chat. "I couldn't tell you. Those were my orders."
