I swallowed hard. "I would have told you."

Her gaze searched mine, and I could see the hurt in them. But she turned away from me and back to Gabe. "So does he know I'm his daughter?"

Gabe sighed. "All signs seem to point to yes. Especially after Connor slipped our nets. He might have gotten word to him at least that Dove had a kid. We had Rook put a couple of traps on for anyone who went looking for information about your birth certificate and discovered the record had been accessed. If he doesn't know yet, he will soon."

"Oh, fucking fantastic. It just keeps getting worse. He's been trying to catch me, but what's he going to do once he finds that I am his daughter?"

"That's what we don't know." He slid his glance to me and I could tell what he was going to suggest. I shook my head, but he ignored me. "You offered to be bait before. Maybe now is your chance. It's a big decision you need to make and one that you should make on your own." That last bit was clearly for me as he gave me a pointed look.

“We can get you inside his organization. We can put an end to this, find out what he wants, and act like we're going to give it to him. And then we capture him."

"You said it was dangerous."

"It is. I'm not pretending like it's not."

"You said that I could get hurt."

Gabe nodded. "We believed it was a high probability, but if he knows that you're his daughter, he's not likely to harm you."

"You don't know that."

"We don't. But it's either this or keep dodging bullets. Your call."

CHAPTER 43

KAYA

Something was wrong with Jasper.I saw it on his face back in Gabe's office. I just wasn't exactly sure what it was he was thinking.

He didn't want me to be bait for Antonio Igno. Hell, I didn't want to walk into the lion's den of a known terrorist. I didn't ask to be any part of this convoluted situation. But if we could end this now, end it for everyone safely, wouldn't that be better?

The look on his face told me he wanted to say something. His brows furrowed and suddenly he had lines around his mouth as if he was holding something in. Something big that he had to say or do. What was going on with him?

"Jasper, what's wrong?"

His gaze met mine then. I could see it all right there in his eyes. My world was about to come crashing down.

"Kaya, I'm sorry."

"Sorry for what?"

He shook his head. "I didn't know about your father. I didn't know any of that."

I relaxed marginally. "Oh, I know. You're just as surprised as I was. It's okay, we'll figure it out. I don't know what Gabe is thinking. I can't walk in there. I can't pretend that I'm excited tomeet him and want to know all about him. That requires a level of acting I am not sure I have."

I was prattling on, but he continued to say nothing, and I frowned because I was worried. Something wasn't right, and this whole conversation was going very, very wrong. Why was he giving me that look?

"Jasper, what is it?"

"Kaya, you should do it. Gabe will have someone on you. This is something you should do."

I frowned. "What? You want me to walk into Igno's? Haven't you spent weeks telling me how dangerous he is? How I had to be careful? That was you, right?"

"I know. I know, but there will be Rogues all over you. You don’t have to think you are going it alone."

"Are you one of the ones who'll be with me? Will you be watching out for me?"

I saw it then. It wasn't worry I saw in those moss green eyes. He was cooling off toward me. Toward us. He was shutting me out.
