CHAPTER 8

SAINT

That icy, clawing feeling in my gut wasn’t fear. Of course not. I wasn’t afraid of this woman, especially since I had only met her once. I knew next to nothing about her.

Except how she tastes. And the amazing little throaty growling sound she makes when you take away something she enjoys.

Just the thought of our kiss and the sound she made when I pulled back made my cock stiffen and throb. I ground my teeth, thinking about the way she moaned, the way her lips felt against mine.

I had to get this shit under control before I had to face off with her. This situation was dire. She was on my fucking doorstep. How did she even know where to find me? Who was this girl, and what the fuck did she want from me? Besides to make life a living hell.

Is that what you call kissing her? That was not the impression you gave.

My conscience and I needed to have a talking to when this was all said and done.

Thanks to the Rogues helicopter, I was on the roof of my building in less than fifteen minutes after Gabe’s call. I was out on the helipad, yanking open the rooftop door in no time.

I asked Reed Daniels, one of our comms guys, “Tell me something good mate, where the fuck is she now?”

“She’s made it down the hall from the server room. Best I can tell, she is in a broom closet.”

What the fuck would she be doing in a broom closet? “Wait. Do you think she has a blueprint of the building already? If so, she knows there are vents connecting rooms all around the building. You don’t think she’s small enough to fit through them, do you?”

Shocked at that idea, Daniels started clicking faster on his keypad. “No, that’s gotta be impossible. A child could barely fit through those vents.”

Fucking hell, she was going to hurt herself. She was coming after me for some reason, and I was worried for her safety? What a knob I was. But what if Gabe was right and she was in trouble?

And you refused to help her.

I did not refuse. I just had more pressing concerns about getting answers from Connor Lohman. Besides, Gabe would have someone else covering her. It just wouldn't be me who was responsible for her safety.

I jogged down the three flights of stairs to the seventeenth floor, and my first stop was the server room, making sure that she hadn't made a mess there. Any breach of the server room should set off silent alarms everywhere, but it paid to be sure. All of our games and apps, everything was stored there. While everything was backed up, there was still damage that could be done.

I continued the search for Kaya near the supply closet. Talking to Daniels on the comm set in my ear, I asked, “Do you see her?”

“She should be right there. You should be looking straight at her.”

All I saw was our normal janitor pushing a cart of cleaning supplies down at the other end of the hall. He wore overalls as his uniform, and they were baggy on him. Lumbering away slowly, Anton had a slight hitch in his gait, as always. My gaze went down to his trainers. He always wore these orthopedic beige ones all the time. But these trainers were bright blue.

Shit.

I spoke into the comm. “I think I have her.”

The moment I spoke, the janitor froze and slowly turned. Except our friendly custodian wasn't Anton at all. It was her—Kaya Reynolds.

Her eyes went wide as mine narrowed. She took off running, headed for the service stairs. With a groan, I took off after her. It was too early for this kind of chase. What the fuck was she doing to me?

Thank goodness it was still early enough that there were few people on this level. Anyone who was here was likely in the gym or the spa facilities downstairs. Nobody would be working this early. Except maybe Trevor, but even he didn't come in this early.Usually. I was sure today he would show up just in the middle of this rundown.

“Tell me where she is Daniels!” I shouted in my comms.

“She’s taking the service stairs, and she’s already down one floor.”

I knew how to cut her off. Instead of going directly for her, I went for the freight elevator that would take me to the fourteenth floor. I could swing back up the stairs and catch her in the middle. Swiping my card, I got lucky, and it was only one floor above me.

I jumped in the oversized elevator and back out almost immediately on the fourteenth floor, sprinting along thecorridor, hopefully parallel to her. “Keep talking to me, Daniels. I need you to tell me where she is at all times.”

“Looks like she's right on top of you.”
