Good. That meant I was right. She was going to change her clothes and make it look like she was one of the employees. Blend in one way or the other. Not bad Kaya, not bad at all.

“Did she make it into the server room?” Daniels asked.

“Not as far as I can tell, unless she had some way of shutting down the alarms from inside the room, and I don't see that happening. This all was probably a calculated risk for her to see if she could make it there.”

“Yeah, but what could she be after?”

“That, my friend, is up to you to find out.”

When I hit the south stairs, I took them two at a time up one floor. But I was too late. She was already coming out of the corridor, hair pulled high into a ponytail, a bouncing corkscrew of curls, and she had her workout gear on. God, she looked good.

When Kaya heard the stairway door click, she turned and smirked at me.

Jesus, you’re in so much trouble with this one.

And she headed right back for the service stairs. This time I followed her. For every step she took, I took three. I was gaining quickly on her until she hopped the railing down to the next level.

“Jesus fucking Christ, woman. You’re going to break your neck.”

She didn’t even slow down to acknowledge me. Just kept moving.

Kaya hit the bottom floor, her hand on the exit door, just as I was making it down the last steps. I called out, “Wait.”

Again, she didn't listen. The door exited into a hallway, and she was already sprinting toward the parking garage. But I hadanticipated that and took the short cut through the building that she didn’t know about and met her on the parking deck.

I reached out, wrapped an arm around her waist, and dragged her body against mine.

“Let me go, arsehole!”

“You break intomyplace of work to do God knows what, and you think I'm going to let you go? Hell, no.”

She struggled against me to get away, but I had her locked in my arms. Backing us up against the corner of the concrete walls, I whispered to her, “You're going to stop moving right now. I don't want to hurt you or for you to hurt yourself. I want you completely intact when I call the police.”

Her eyes went wide, and she cried, “You can't prove anything.”

“I've got you on cameras, darling.”

“Are you sure you do?”

“I've also caught you red-handed.”

“Unless I escape?”

The fire sparked in her eyes, and I could feel it straight down deep into my bones. The heat, the electricity, the burning need, and I swallowed hard against it. This was not what I needed right this minute.

A car drove slowly by as if looking for a parking spot, although there were many. With a sharp inhale, she ducked and turned her head into my chest immediately.

“Are you in trouble?”

When the car rolled away, she turned her gaze back to me, chin lifted, eyes still sparking. “I'm fine. No thanks to you.”

“What the fuck is that supposed to mean? I met you last night. And so far, you have already proven to be a handful. We’re going back to the offices to sort this out. Let's go.”

“Me? A handful? Because of you, my whole life, everything I've worked toward, is over. No flat, no more school, no morevolunteering. You stuck your goon squad on me, and I have to get out of here.”

I blinked slowly. Was she mad? “What goons?”

“You and Connor are working together. His men last night. That car now. Why did you come after me yourself just now? You could have just had one of them grab me.”
