I might have growled a little when I asked, “How lovely?”

Of course the twat was friendly with his too perfect hair and too perfect smile. Stepping past her, I said, “I'll put this in the fridge for you.”

“I appreciate it. You’ve done a lot for me. I’m not sure how I’ll be able to pay you back.”

The fact that she thought she had to pay me back irritated the hell out of me. “You don't need to do anything. Just lay low, be safe, and that’s all we’re going to worry about right now.”

She tucked her hands in the back pockets of her jeans. She looked every bit the co-ed now, curls loose and free, bouncing around her shoulders. I wanted to wrap one of those silken curls around my finger and tug just a bit.

But that would be creepy, you git…

“You have everything you need?” I tried to change the path of my thoughts.

“Honestly, thank you for everything. You didn't have to do any of this.”

I pierced her with a studious look. “You and I both know I did. I couldn't just leave you. You were likely to get yourself killed.”

The tip of her tongue peeked out to moisten her lower lip, and I bit back a moan. That was the last imagery I needed in my head.

“Look while I appreciate everything you did and are doing, I'll be out of your hair in a couple of days. I just need to sort out accommodations and make sure they’re safe.”

The hell? Where did she think she was going? “Do you know who's chasing you?”

“No but—”

“And do you know what they want?” I prompted.

“Again, no, but I can’t—”

“And do you know if it's even safe to leave here for anywhere on the planet?”

She sighed then acquiesced. “No.”

“So again, where the fuck would you go?”

She pressed her lips together in a firm line. “I'm not a prisoner. I can go when I want.”

She has you there.

“Yep, anytime you want. There’s the door, and you obviously know how to use it. Just tell me all the details of who's chasing you, and I'll be the first one driving you to wherever you need to go. Until then, use your head, woman.”

She narrowed her gaze mutinously, but she knew I had a point.

“Also, I've dealt with the police.”

Her eyes went wide. “I’m not really fond of the police.”

“This is my shocked face. Can you tell? After all you said today about having to go on the lam, I took care of it. You can relax, they won't come looking for you. I answered their questions and handed them the shell casings found in the garage. And they have the evidence to play with in their little labs. You’re clear.”

“My, you are a regular fairy godfather, aren't you?”

There was a hint of a smile playing on her lips, and I couldn't stop staring. I did not have time for this…thingbetween us. I needed to get back to Rogues Division. But somehow, I couldn’t make myself walk away when she smiled like that. I wanted to stay. I felt a need to make sure she was all right. And being here caused an ache in the center of my chest to return.

Just as fast as I came into the flat, I started my exit. “I’m off. Stay inside. I’ll be back later.”

“Wait! Where are you going?” The lonely plea in her voice nearly had me stopping.

But I couldn't very well tell her where I was going. “I have errands. I'll check on you before I go to bed.”
