"I don't have a look."

"Oh, you have a look. It's the look of someone who's trapped. She likes Rook, and you think they have a thing going on."

"I know they don't have a fuckingthing."

Lachlan just laughed. "Okay, if you say so."

We got our assignments for the training op. Lachlan was supposed to sneak around the back. Tabs was going in through the front door with Saffron. They were trying the good old Berlin tactic of two women in need of help. It was my job to get to the perpetrator, and then Lock would meet me and help me extract the hostages. Except, on our first round, as I approached Rook, doing his level best to play the baddie, when we engaged in hand-to-hand, I may or may not have pulled my punches, and landed him flat on his back.

From the ground, he smirked at me. "Lucky hit."

"No such thing as luck."

He jumped to his feet with his usual grin. "Next time, I won't take it so easy on you, old man."

I wanted to hit him all over again, but Lachlan pushed us apart and waved Rook away. "What the fuck is wrong with you?"

"Nothing."

But he didn't budge. Didn't move out of the way. "Tell me."

"He's going on a date with Kaya."

Lachlan's eyes went wide. Then he coughed a laugh. "Ooooooh, boy. Even with the ruse set up?"

"I just know what she told me."

"So, they're going out. You know, maybe you could just tell her how you feel? That would be noble."

I scowled at him. "I don'tfeellike anything."

"Except we've had this convo twice now. The first time, you damn near knocked Rook out, and the second time, you clotheslined him."

"He walked into my arm."

Lock laughed. "If you say so. Maybe you'd be better off just talking to her. That might fix this."

"No, I have another solution in mind."

Lock lifted his brows. "Why do I have a feeling I'm not going to like this?"

"I'm going to ruin their date."

Kaya

It wasn't that Westin was bad company. He was funny. He'd taken many of the same classes I was currently in, and the conversation was light, easy. I just wasn't into it. Which was so surprising because he was lovely.

But he's not Saint.

And Saint… I hadn't seen hide nor hair of him since early that morning. He'd just sent me cryptic texts when I was in class earlier telling me he'd be home late.

I wasn't sure what that meant because he'd been coming home late some nights. When I'd tried to ask him about it, he wouldn't tell me anything.

Also, this isn't your home.

No, but it had started to feel that way a little bit. A home away from home. The opportunity to still resume some of my normal life. Whatever the hell that meant.

"Earth to Kaya. Well, how was it?"
