I start for the door when she stops me. “Oh, there’s mail for you. A letter.”

Frowning, I go in and there’s a pile of mail on the counter behind the front desk. Me being here isn’t a secret, but I don’t have family, and usually friends are going to email over sending something. Thinking it’s junk mail, I find it and stare down.

No. Not. Junk.

My name and address are there, written in with what I can only guess is a fountain pen. Thick strokes of strong writing, from a man who believes writing like that shows him to be alpha and sophisticated.

It’s handwriting I haven’t seen in years.

With shaking fingers, I open the envelope and pull out the thick cream note paper.

My world rocks at the first line.

My dear wife.

Chapter Six

Leland

What is this chick’s problem? I’m charming. And I’m not sure my flirt with her last week warranted that cold shoulder.

The ass was perfect, though. Lovely, round, and practically begging me to touch it and become exactly what she not so subtly accused me of.

I didn’t, no matter how much my hands itched to touch her ass.

I’m not a monster.

Even earlier today, I ran into her, in the literal sense. I was going into the bakery, and she was coming out.

There was a look on her face like she wanted to cry, except I don’t think she’s the crying kind of woman. But something has her upset. And fuck me if she didn’t smell better than the sugary goodness coming from that bakery.

It had been a sweet spot of morning flowers, like dawn rising, and it cut the sweetness with a fresh breath of sensuality that was at once innocent and earthy—elemental and female.

I could breathe her in all night long.

Actually, I could do a lot more than breathe her in, but that’s another story.

She barely spoke as she ran off, her old jeans hugging that fine ass and long legs just right.

I’m not even an ass man. But I could be around her. Though something told me there’d be a lot I’d like about her.

Pity I’m not going to find out. She’s just another woman in town, and I know how they get. But flirting, having fun with her, that I’m into.

And yeah, okay, I wouldn’t say no to a night of horizontal fun with her.

Right now, I don’t have time for shit. I’ve got a bunch of crap I have to do for my job, and one of those things is a trip.

After speaking to Dakota and seeing her letter from Alpine, I think I should go investigate them. Or hire my buddy, Brock, and his PI firm. I need to get a better feel for this company. Just a little look to see who they’re sending to town. See if I can ruffle feathers in person. And what they could be up to. The last thing we need is for them to file for eminent domain.

The phone and email are getting me nowhere.

I’m deep in thought about what needs to happen when a snippy voice that sounds like smoke coils around me.

“Watch it.”

There’s a shiver that races over my skin as I look down at Sarah.

Her scowl can’t take away her prettiness. And those green-gold eyes glitter like fire.
