“Oh my God, Sarah!” Dakota’s voice rings out, and we spring apart, the fly screen door banging. “You have to try this.”

Then she stops.

I glare up at Leland, telling myself I’m beyond happy about the interruption to a mistake I don’t want to make.

He doesn’t turn and gives me a small shrug. “Man issues.”

Heat floods me. He’s got an erection. Over me. Not that it means anything except he wants to have sex with the hard-to-get woman.

One he doesn’t remember having had sex with.

“What’s going on?” Dakota asks.

I step past him. “Nothing. He got mad over the fact I forgot to invite him to the tasting party we’re having for the resort’s opening.”

“Yep,” he says. “You know me. Can’t resist a night of free booze and food.”

That’s the excuse I cooked up with Lawson for the surprise engagement, a tasting party to showcase the new chef and what will be the restaurant at the lodge.

Before either of them can say another thing, I start heading back in. “I’ve got work to do.”

“Sarah—”

“Goodnight, Leland. Glad we got that sorted.”

I don’t look back as I go past Dakota and make my way to my office, pulling up my computer to pretend to work.

That almost kiss was nothing more than a weak moment. Nothing more. And the man is hotter than sin. But I know who and what he is.

About twenty minutes later, Leland’s rich voice and Dakota’s come past my closed door, but thank goodness, they don’t knock.

I know Jonah, who’s got a place not too far from here, will be working late, but I don’t have an appetite for companionship or food anymore.

A soft knock sounds at my door about ten minutes later and Dakota comes in. “I’m heading home.”

She doesn’t move.

I finish the email to a supplier, press send, and glance up to meet her gaze. “Okay, be careful.”

“Okay, Sarah, out with it, girl. You’ve been weird since you got that letter. Do I have to get Lawson to arrest someone? And I’m not even going to ask about what was going on out there with Leland, except I clearly interrupted something and I’m sorry.”

I sigh. “Don’t be. You did me a favor.”

She doesn’t look convinced. “So, what was the letter? I’m your friend. You’ve always been there for me, so let me be there for you.”

“The letter.” I clasp my hands together. “It’s nothing.”

“Sarah.”

“I don’t want to bug you.”

“Remember when I caught my skank stepsister and boyfriend together?”

I shudder. “Oh, I remember those repulsive losers. You don’t have to bring them up with me. Thankfully, you wised up and got something so much better. Let me say, you won the prize with Lawson, and you deserve it.”

She points at me. “See? That’s what I’m talking about. You were there for me. Now, let me be here for you. What’s going on?”

Slowly, I release my breath. “Turns out my ex-husband isn’t so ex after all, and he’s not interested in getting back with me—”
