That look should be for me.

Not a player like Josh.

“Uh oh,” Mack says from no-fucking-where, “seems like you’ve got some competition.”

“Tell your friend to keep his grubby hands off her.”

Mack snorts a laugh. “Not your errand boy, Leland.” He slaps my back. “You’re thinking of my brother.”

“I know my way around the law, Mack. I could kill you and not get charged.”

“The sheriff’s my twin, dude. Never gonna fly.” He laughs again. “Hey, you think Josh is about to make his move?”

“No.”

“No?”

“I’m going to stop him.”

“Good luck,” he says, and takes off after a waiter who has a tray of booze.

Mack’s good at goading. It’s good-natured goading, but all the same, goading.

Josh, however . . .

The man’s a friend, but he’s closer to Mack and Isaac than to me and Lawson. He isn’t aware of that unspoken rule.

So, I go up to them. Sarah’s back stiffens a little before she turns and locks gazes with me, and that unguarded thing locks down.

Something in me tightens. The air is alive between us.

“Parsons,” I say, barely lifting my eyes from her. “Enjoying yourself?”

“I’m about to. She’s pretty, isn’t she, Conley?”

This time I look at him, and there’s a knowing smile on his face as he drops his hands, holding them both up to show he’s stepping back, even as he stays where he is.

“She is.”

“She,” says Sarah with an avalanche of ice, “has a name and a voice and a mind of her own. Leland thinks all women want him. He’s pathetic.”

“Don’t project, Sarah,” I say, taking her hand and pulling her to me before she can react. “I know how you feel and who you want.”

“Let me go, Leland. I’m having a perfectly good conversation here with Josh, and—”

“Oh, man, I hear my name being called.” Josh points to the other side of the room. “Way over there. Good luck.”

And I don’t know if that’s meant for her or for me, but I honestly don’t give a damn. He’s no longer got Sarah in his sights.

When he goes Sarah glares. “Take your hand off me.”

But I pull her into my arms. “Not on your sweet life. Dance with me.”

Chapter Nine

Sarah

Leland’s arms are strong and sure and feel good around me.
