I smile back. “True. But around here, you might find the value of things isn’t as monetary as you’d like.”

“This is prime land, and what we want to do there is going to benefit everyone.”

“And your profits.”

“It’s a company, not an organization. Without profits, we go under and people have fewer energy options.”

I nod. “So, you’re not checking in with the sheriff?”

“I’m here to look around, that’s all. We’re just interested to see what other options there are.”

“Well, I handle the Downs property, so that’s a closed door.”

“I’m sure we’ll be talking again soon. Or one of my fellow colleagues.”

By colleagues, I’m sure he means the big-gun lawyers. I’m not stupid, no matter what people think about small-town lawyers.

“Looking forward to it.” I smile again.

He turns to the door. “I figured I’d do the courtesy of introducing myself since you took the trouble going to our Edgemere office.”

“I had business in town and thought I’d check in, do the courtesy.”

He opens the door and Sarah is there.

A thrill slides through my veins.

“Just remember, Mr. Bailey, that this is a small town.”

“Couldn’t forget.”

“Now, if you’ll excuse me, my next appointment is here.” I wave her in. It’s the perfect excuse to end this little whatever the fuck it is . . . sizing up?

There’s not much I can do right now.

She sidles in, dressed in her uniform of jeans, shirt, and boots, only this time, she has a hoodie zipped halfway to keep the chill away.

“Finally here about the legal matter you have?”

“No.”

My heart isn’t in the play right now. There’s a lot on my mind, and when my computer pings, I swing it around and check. A quick message from Melissa with another appointment outside.

When I see the name, I frown.

Then, I glance at pretty Sarah and sigh.

I sit on the edge of my desk. “You know, I’d love nothing more than to pick up where we left off last night, or get my flirt on with you, but unfortunately, I’m busy, and since you don’t do social calls to get your fill of me,” I shrug, “I’m thinking you’re here with something else on your mind.”

Her hands are in the pockets of the hoodie. “Yeah. I figured I’d help Dakota out since I needed to come to town and drop off some things to you about the resort. Nothing exceptional.”

She’s holding something back. It’s there in the way she doesn’t seem comfortable in her own skin, the defensive stand.

“And?”

“Just some mail from Alpine. They’re saying they’re in town.”

“You just met them.”
