I know that’s what he did.

But that isn’t the topic, is it? It’s me and Billy, and the fact this man has some kind of angle I’m not seeing.

“I’ll be coming to you in a way,” I say, turning to face him and putting my hands in my pockets so I don’t take a defensive stance, like crossing my arms. “Divorce papers. I guess I didn’t do it right the first time. But I think we both know I’m way too old for you, so . . .”

“Oh, you are that. Looking good, though. Divorce papers won’t fly, Sarah.”

I frown. “What do you mean?”

“You’re too old for my tastes, but I’m moving into higher positions, more power, and that does bring with it more scrutiny.”

“Alpine?”

He only smiles.

It’s the only thing that makes sense. Why he’s here—apart from me—and why he’s seeing Leland.

“You’re buying into them, aren’t you?”

“No need to worry that pretty little head of yours with business.”

Oh, I could punch the bastard. Pretty head? Seriously?

“Get a pretty young doll to be your new bride. Apart from we haven’t seen each other in years, I don’t want to stay married to you.”

“You haven’t seen me, but I’ve always known where you are, who you sleep with, like that lawyer.”

Something in me snaps and fire sweeps my veins. He knows? But Leland . . . somehow, I stop myself from lashing out. “You spy on me?”

“You are my wife.”

“I’m going to be your ex-wife once and for all.”

He laughs, but there’s a note of something in it. “No, my dear wife, I think you won’t. I always liked you, put time into you, and gave you my ring. Maybe I’ll let others have you since I don’t want you, but . . . I need an age-appropriate woman at my side.”

“I’m still way too young for you, and you know it. You’re what? Pushing fifty? No, thanks. I have a life, one I’ve built away from you, and I like this town and my job. If you think I want your money, rest easy, all I want is your name on that dotted line. In fact, I bet I don’t need that.”

“Do it, try it, and I’ll make your existence miserable. You live alone, don’t you? In that brand new resort?”’

I hesitate.

Thing is, while we have guests, we’re still building the business. And we have staff who are there overnight, but we don’t have other staff living there full-time. My room—my suite, I guess you’d call it—is at the back of the main building. Thesudden buzzing in my ears and the heat at the back of my neck from sudden tension tells me he knows exactly where my room sits.

He doesn’t need to make an actual threat to make one, and—

“How old is your latest that you need me?”

“Not underage. They come and go.”

“You sicken me.” And he does. This girl has got to be borderline illegal for him to fuck.

“You didn’t say that when you were seventeen.”

“I was seventeen, I was alone, and a kid is easily flattered. Kid. Not adult. Have you asked yourself why you need to go so young, what’s wrong with you?”

“Nothing wrong with liking youth. And in liking young and innocent, they seem to like me too.”

I laugh harshly. “The answer is no, Billy, so find another bride.
