“Sarah?”

She gets up. “Yes?”

“Be careful.”

She frowns. “You say that like you’re going to do something stupid.”

“I’m going to talk to that sick fuck.”

She swallows. “You seem to know what he likes to do from the way you asked me . . . the things with me, I . . .” Sarah raises her head. “I was so flattered he wanted me. I thought I was in love. I don’t know, maybe I was, but some of those things aren’t me. I don’t like—”

Sarah stops and puts a hand to her mouth, and I slide my hand against her cheek.

“Seventeen, Sarah. And whatever gets you off, but that’s too young for a man of his age and tastes. And he’s to blame, not you.”

I drop a kiss on her forehead because as much as I want her mouth right now, as much as I want to show her how much I’ve wanted her, I can’t do that.

She’s no delicate flower, but it’s a lot. If I make a move. I look as creepy as that soon-to-be-ex of hers.

“I am going to talk to him, though.”

“Leland.”

“This? This is privileged conversation between a client and lawyer, so no, not that. But I need him and the other guy in town to understand that certain lines don’t get crossed. I’ve had words with the Alpine guy and I’m going to do the same with William.”

“You punched him. He’s not going to talk to you.”

“He will. Now, do me a favor. These people aren’t above intimidation, so be careful and don’t be alone—”

“There’s a night manager and porter.”

“Good.”

When she goes, I go into my office and sit behind my desk. There’s a bottle of bourbon I’d love to have a glass of, but later, at the brewery.

Instead, I pull up that email from earlier. William King, a.k.a. Billy the fucking perv, did me the solid of letting me know where he’d be staying.

I then grab my cell and call Lawson. “How do you feel about taking a little trip for an hour or so?”

“Where?”

“To see William King and find out what’s up with the sudden reinterest in Dakota’s property.”

Chapter Thirteen

Sarah

Tonight is our official grand opening, though we’ve opened already and have had a couple people stay so far since Dakota’s engagement. It’s not huge but it’s a way for the town and guests to have a taste of the menu that we’ll be serving and enjoy being in the resort. Standard in the industry and word of mouth always works wonders. That and social media.

Dakota and I created an account for the resort and have several shares and likes. Comments as well.

We’re busy and the energy that buzzes in me is the wrong sort of nervous.

Dakota’s been the Dakota version of fussing about me, which I can take because it’s pretty non-invasive. She knows what happened with Billy and Leland, but it’s where her mind is that gets to me.

Me and Leland.

She’s all about pushing us together. I can see it in her eyes. She’s plotting.
