Lawson glances to where I’m looking. “I’m so fucking proud of her.”

“I can’t believe she’s all grown up.”

“Don’t even think about it,” he says, but there’s no rancor in his voice.

I laugh. “I don’t think that girl has any time for anyone. Every time I see Rose, she’s got her nose in some giant book. But, man, is she gonna make some guy happy one day. If there’s one good enough.”

“If.” He shakes his head. “She adores Dakota.”

“Of course, she does. You know we sound like old men.”

Lawson laughs. “Speak for yourself, Conley.”

“I’m speaking for both of us.” I pause. “So . . . the wedding?”

“Small. For her, I’d go big, but she just wants it small, which I love. Dakota’s only going to have Sarah as maid of honor, and she asked Rose to be a bridesmaid. I want you and Mack standing up with me. I couldn’t pick between the two of you, so I want you both as my best men.”

“I’m honored.” I grin. “I’ll definitely stand at your side next to your brother.”

Lawson grins and shakes his head. “We’re twins, and I’ll be happy when he finally decides to be done with the whole playing the field thing. Evidently, Dad informed him that he needs to find him a woman or Mom’s going to do it for him. Even said he should talk to Sarah, which Dakota shot down that idea, saying Sarah and Mack would kill each other.”

I nod not wanting to think of Mack with Sarah, but I don’t miss the knowing look. “What’s Sarah’s deal, anyway?”

“About what?”

“Me, asshole, me.”

Lawson shrugs. “Like I said, talk to her.”

“She runs, man. I told you that. Things seem to be on a better footing and then she gets this look like I’ve hurt her somehow before, and wham, back to the fucking start.”

“The ex?”

“Nah.” I take a swallow, letting the heat and sweet honeyed oak of the bourbon run through me. It’s good stuff, but then I wouldn’t expect people like Sarah and Dakota to go with anything less than the best. “She’s strong, and it was a long time ago. She’s embarrassed and doesn’t want it out there, but it’s not some gaping wound. At least, I don’t think so.”

“No?” He laughs and shoots his gaze to me. “Maybe it’s your winning personality.”

“If that were the case, she’d already be mine.”

“You know you sound like a pig.”

“You know you did, too, before you fell in love and decided to marry Dakota.”

“What can I say?” He grins. “She redeemed me.” Then the grin fades. “I’ll ask my wildcat. They’re best friends, she should know.”

Fuck, I don’t want that. “No, don’t worry about it.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah.”

He turns his glass in his hands. “You know this thing with you and Sarah, it’s not going to affect the wedding, is it?”

“You know me better than that. And it isn’t a thing. It’s not a thing at all.”
