After the briefing about the possible outbreak, most everyone left the room. I grabbed Jace’s hand to hold him back and closed the door.

“How in the hell did you manage this?”

“They talked to me about becoming a Hunter at the monastery. Turns out I’m really fast now, and I’ve been learning martial arts. I seem to have a talent for it. The monks were happy at how good I was at it, and they suggested training to be a Hunter. Since I don’t have another job…”

“You know there’ll be a lot of traveling involved, right?”

“Yes, but Tyler is doing really well, and so is my mother. They both understand I have to work, and they’ve been great about it. My mother has decided to sell her house and move in with her sister. Who, by the way, has been thoroughly told off for putting Tyler away. I think she’s learned her lesson there. Besides, I wanted to see you. Be with you.”

I couldn’t wait any longer. I pulled him into my arms and kissed him senseless. A long time later, when I had him backed up against the door, plastering my body against his and already planning how fast I could get him to my hotel room, he pulled back a little and looked up at me.

“Are you sure about this? I knew I wanted you for the longest time, but I feel like I kind of ambushed you.”

“No doubts, Jace. There’s no room for doubt when you’re in love.”

He took in a sharp breath and stared up at me. “Love?”

“I think someone has to say it first. And I’m willing to bite the bullet.” I kissed the tip of his nose. “I love you, Jace. Damn, I’m crazy about you. You don’t have to say it back right away, but I wanted you to know.”

“What if I want to say it back?”

I smiled down at him. “Then you definitely should.”

He pulled my head closer for another kiss, a sweet brushing of his lips over mine. “I love you too,” he whispered, and I bent my head to take another his lips again. After a minute, he pushed on my chest and looked up at me. “But what will Conway say?

I shrugged and kissed him again. “I have to say that the last thing I’m thinking of right now is Conway. But anyway, who cares? He’s my friend, so he’ll be happy for me, and it’s not about the past but about what we’re going to do starting right now and in the future. And I, for one, intend to do you a lot.”

“Oh God, I do love a sweet talker,” he sighed into my lips. “How soon can we get started?”

The End
